The Evergreen State College
Engaging with the Endangered Northwest
A student film by, Shannon Pangalos-Scott
With an alarming percentage of our population suffering from mental illness. The primary mission of this film is to educate ourselves about the importance of our relationship with nature and how we can experience a healing effect on our mind, body and soul when we learn to connect with our natural environment.
It didn’t take long after diving in and learning a considerable amount of medical and scientific facts about mental illness and how nature can impact that. To realize that as much as this is an education problem, as it is a HEART problem.
There is a strength we can all find in nature, even though this project only focuses on the mental healing aspect of nature, the benefits are vast. It is able to not only heal our minds but has been proven to heal our bodies and our souls as well.
I felt like it was important that there is a universal understanding of what mental illness is. And the impact it has on the people in our lives, our friends, our loved ones. When we learn how this effects those around us we are in a better position to reach out and encourage others to take that first step. Even if at first, it’s just into their own backyard.
****
They say there is no cure for PTSD, but those of us that have learned to have that connection with our environment, we know that there can be healing in nature.
