Lesson on Causes of Hypercoagulability, including Virchow’s triad, and a mnemonic device to help remember the hypercoagulable causes of arterial and venous clots. Thrombotic events (deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism etc.) are caused by an issue with at least one of Virchow’s triad, but in this lesson we focus on hypercoagulability as a cause of these thrombotic events. Hypercoagulation can be due to a variety of inherited conditions (antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, factor V leiden, sticky platelet syndrome, etc.), and some acquired conditions (malignancy, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, etc.). In this lesson, we discuss these causes, along with an easy way to remember them. We also discuss the specific causes of venous clots and arterial clots.
