This is something I try to impress on my students when we discuss Roman history--that cultural quirks, as you put it, matter. Whether it sticks or not, I don't know. Another great video! Looking forward to the next one.

One of the advantage of there system is that you give people immediate context on the event you are referring to. So people don't have to remember what this year was like, they immediately know it.

This is almost identical to how people in Serbia counted time according to holidays.
i.e. ''I was born five days after St. George`s day''

Was this system also used by the pesants? And how (if at all) did the system change with the rise of the empire? Did the people just start saying "I was born in the first year of Julius Caesar"?
