FYI, the M1 Max does 1000 Nits brightness, you can install an app that unlock it. Apple likely didn't give users access to go that high due to impact on battery but it's there if you need it.

I guess this video finally convinced me to get the M1 Max. A friend of a friend is selling his (around 10 cycles) 4tb vs the M4 pro 14” since both are $2000. What worries me is that is a little older but I should be able to use for at least 3-4 years, and hell, I can use it for storing projects!

I'm a video professional on an M1 Pro 14" with external screen. It has been better than any other laptop I've ever had, but I'm getting impatient when I'm working on heavier projects. Which is hilarious, because I've cut documentaries on intel apple laptops where I had to transcode all material to 720p prores and leave exports going overnight! Now I don't have to do that, but yeah, I'm feeling it that I should have gone M1 Max in the first place but I cheaped out and kind of regret it. Looking into an M4 Max but will see if I can budget for it. I'm glad you just made the premiere playback section super clear. That is all I want really, smooth playback in as many situations as possible.

I dunno why people are mad you're comparing these. I got a M1 max like 1.5 years ago and saw that now the M4 pro with 24GB costs the same as my M1 max with 32GB did. Happy I got the M1 Max cause I need memory

I’ll keep the near top of the line 16” M1 Max I got for 42% off original price earlier this year. It was new old stock, and I was even able to add AppleCare. I paid about $2900, and it’s better spec’ed than the one in the video!

I have an m1 max with a broken screen, I've been looking at getting the M4 pro because of how expensive fixing this screen is.

That any M1 "Max" chip beats the "Pro" chips in video playback /export from this and most likely even the next few generations is no wonder.... The max chip has two Media Engines... The Pro models currently feature only one Media Engine. - Till Apple finds a way to improve the Media Engine in a significant way, video production and editing most likely will be faster in standard workflows with even the m1 Max. But any other task aside, also the most heavy rasterized GPU compute, the M4 Pro wins hands down.

It’s interesting to hear your perspective on the nano texture, especially since you work with colour grading photos/videos. I was concerned about how it affects blacks and reduces overall contrast. I assume the experience must be different when viewing it straight on vs at certain angles?

this is very helpful, I'm in exact same situation to consider upgrading from m1 max to m4 pro. Can you also test Final Cut Pro HEVC/h.265 4k export time differences? Thanks!
