What is the ideal home size? Less, but better.

Is there an ideal home size? A perfect size or way to determine the right size home to maximize your happiness. This question of an ideal home size is one I recently asked myself while fantasizing on Zillow, and I think it is an interesting question, one which might just have an answer.

Other than home size, what things do you consider? 🏡

I agree with you about size needed, My family and I sold our home of 1680 sq ft.( 4 bd, 2 bath, formal dinningroom, eat in kitchen, livingroom, and large covered porch, 2 car driveway. we are now renting a 800 sq ft.( 2bd, 11/2 bath, eat in kitchen livingroom, patio and 2 car driveway. I feel relieved. There is so many things to take care of in a larger home. And I don't find myself running to Lowe's every weekend. WE have so much more time to do fun things instead of maintenace on the house.

We have a 3, 200 square foot home for my wife and I (kids are out of the house now) and we love it. But it’s all about layout and design. We have fewer rooms. But the rooms we do have are more spacious and open. It works for us.

I love this video! I also wonder why everyone needs a big house. It’s a lot of responsibility and also a larger financial impact. Me and my husband just bought a small ranch that’s a little over 1400 ft.². It has three bedrooms and each room is cozy and a decent size. We feel it’s perfect for us although most of our friends have larger homes and feel our home is small. We also do not have a basement but the previous owner made a beautiful laundry room office area, which works great for our needs. I can’t see us being any happier in a larger home and this is really easy to keep clean and maintain! Huge bonus.

My family just moved and renting right now. We did own an 1676 sqft. house with a large porch on the back. We are now living in a town house that is 800 sqft. with a small patio and large yard. We found it;s much easier to keep clean because all the floors are tiled. We have a half bath down stairs and a jack and Jill bathroom upstairs. We realized we don't need a dinning room just a eat in kitchen. We feel happier here because there is less to take care of and more time to do fun things.

i have 220 m2 house on 2 floors. first floor are kitchen, dining room, living room, toilet and small storage room. second floor are 4 bedrooms, small office and another toilet. house was bult around 1850 from rocks and concrete (96cm thick walls). bought it almost 20 years ago for about 20k euros (it was in bad shape). it took me 7 years and about 60 000 euros to renovate. It's simple, large enough and i have solar power plant on the roof and i have free heating, cooling and warm water. buying that house is the best thing i ever did

Great video! I share all your reasons for preference to a smaller sized home. My home raised 2 boys who have moved out onto their own. 900 square ft living space upstairs with a finished basement of 900 sqft on .4 acresofland. . This has been a perfect size for us.

I love how you did this according to square feet. Good points!

I so appreciate your candor here. You’re speaking my language. Been scratching my head wondering why everybody has to live in the big house? My husband and I own a 1350 sq. Ft. Home that was built 1940 - 1960. I bought it in 2000, and had it completely renovated and remodeled back in 2008. We love it. 1/3 acre lot overlooking a small lake, and a full basement that walks out to the yard. Guess what. It’s paid for! Lol.

I love smaller homes. Easy to clean and maintain. 750 sq ft is ideal just for me. Sadly, in my city that would cost close to 1 million.

Great video. I am a 48yo, single man without children. The hardest part For me is finding a nice, small home in an upper class neighborhood. All of the homes are too big. I don't want to rent nor live in an apartment. I guess affluent equals big house?

I am strongly considering converting the empty office at my business into a studio/sleeping quarters or buying a fully loaded 2 year old SUV to live in. I have a high income but I can't see wasting money on rent or living in large homes. I'd rather spend $40k on new Ford Explorer and live in it. I was a car dweller for 5 years and actually enjoyed it.

see if you have only one thing in a house like one bathroom you should make it spacious and functional to where maybe more than one person like 3 people can use it at the same time. i know someone who lives in a gorgeous old farmhouse in NC and she has 3 bedrooms and one bathroom but the bathroom is spacious enough and not cramped. she also doesn't have a seperate dinning room and she has a laundry area right off her kitchen and the bedrooms are spacious but not huge and neither of them have huge walk in closets its a perfect balance. i don't want a tiny house but i also don't like really big houses because i don't like when space goes unused.

My criteria for my ideal house size is the one where I can perform most basic domestic functions with the least movement, a size that I can reasonably maintain just by myself without consuming much of my time to do other things. Even if I have extra lot space I would use that as sports yard, swimming pool, workshop, but not to enlarge my house.

Our 160 square feet house is just fine for 2 people. This includes a covered deck area and the grounds are about the same size again. We are walking distance to everything including bush walks, movies, restaurants- the list is endless. As a result, we have no need for a larger house.

My friends are saying that my 4BD house with 2150 sqft is small. Well, I guess comparing with their 3000 sqft bought 6 years ago with lunch money leftovers with 2% interest.

We’re a family of 3 planning to build an 1800-2000sq ft house on 2 acres(mini homestead) but we plan on having several more children Lord willing. If it were only going to be us 3, I’m happy at 1500. Currently living in 1320sqft and we enjoy it.

I look at the homes being built and think, how much time to clean, how much money to maintain? No thank you. I'll take a 600sq ft home any day over a mcmansion
