Dear students the following very big differences between atomic number and mass number should be keep in mind!
Atomic mass: Sum of the masses of protons, neutrons and electrons in an atom is called atomic mass
OR
Sum of the masses of protons and neutron in an atom is called atomic mass.
Note: Mass of an electron can be neglected due to its very small size.
Atomic mass of an atom may or may not be decimal number.


Mass Number: Sum of the number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom is called Mass number. Mass number is not a decimal number, it is a whole number. For example, carbon-14 is an isotope of carbon. Its mass number is 14 which is whole number because it has 6 electrons and 8 protons.
