Building muscle takes a shit load of consistency and pushing yourself hard af, whereas u can chill with maintaining

What he is saying is mostly true. Yes, the intensity will generally need to higher when you want to build, and with just minimal effort, you can maintain general fitness levels there after.

However, if you leave your foot off the gas for too long and just coast through your workouts, you probably won't maintain your peak (even with gear).

I'm sure Derek is speaking from the prospective of a entrepreneur who's primary focus is the growth of his business. -- which is why he made the statement about mental fatigue.

He talks about fitness, but is not a "fitness influencer" so this advice is golden for most people who don't make a living with their physique.

yup, i'd ALWAYS been trying to gain strength/muscle for like 6 years lol but I've found only recently that maintaining the muscle is SIGNIFICANTLY easier than building it, so like basically if you built the muscle, you still gotta work to KEEP the muscle, but it's not even that much effort honestly lol

Spot on! Literally only take 1/3 is the normal load you lift to maintain the physique you currently have. Such a relief when I found this awesome piece of knowledge! 😮‍💨

Is it still super hard to build muscle if I have taken a break and am coming back?

I am trying to bulk right now. I have a decent foundation of muscle. The gym is the best part of my day and I like to lift for 2-3 hours 6 times a week, but I feel it may not be the most optimal route. I’m eating around 4, 000 calories a day. Any advice from anyone? I figure I shouldn’t try to cut weight for awhile until I have enough muscle to actually look super good when lean

Yup, maintaining is so much easier than gaining indeed.

This is incredibly accurate. Assuming you are naturally or at least mostly naturally. If you became a monster size using peds. You will likely lose a substantial amount.

Start small. 4 workouts per week is still 3.75 workouts more than the average person does every week. That probably sounds daunting to someone who's just getting started.
I made tons of newbie gains on twice per week not even pushing very hard. From there you can let the gains snowball you into a bigger workload.
