HOLBEIN Colored Pencils BIG ANNOUNCEMENT! HOW TO BUY YOUR FAVORITE ART SUPPLIES ETHICALLY #Holbein

Hello my fellow artists and friends! I have a HUGE Holbein Colored Pencils announcement (THEY ARE GOING TO BE FOR SALE IN THE UNITED STATES SOON! WOOOOOHOOO!) and you'll want to tune in as I have it on good word from the companies VP in the US! As an #artist, I've always had a fascination for art supplies, which companies are making a difference in quality, etc. That being said, Holbein have some of my favorite art supplies, and especially their incredible colored pencils. Recently, I had posted a video several months ago on how to find holbein colored pencils through ebay and amazon, along with some online digging. I apologize that I was misinformed that this practice is unethical not only for the sake of the company, but for art supplies in general.

When we purchase art supplies from unauthorized resellers and shady ebay sellers, however unaware, we're contributing slowly to the decline of our smaller art supply stores (especially local) and hurting the companies that produce the real thing. From here on, I want to be an advocate for purchasing art supplies through only authorized sellers and encourage you to do so as well. Please note that I'm not saying you cannot purchase art supplies through amazon. However, if you want to purchase art supplies on amazon in an ethical manner, make sure the seller is an authorized seller. Most companies will be able to provide you with a list of those sellers. Otherwise, you're taking a gamble on whether you may receive counterfeit/defective/modified materials.

I am thrilled to hear this! I have wanted a set or even to try them for years, but never did in fear that they would be confiscated at customs or that I would not be able to replace them when they run out! I'm a regular customer of Blick and I'm so happy to hear they will be carrying them. Thanks for the update!

Jane, you're right about Blick becoming a supplier of Holbein pencils. I spoke with Blick and they confirmed all that you said above. I'm still a bit confused about the lack of pencils available right now. But, sometime in 2021 Blick will be carrying Holbein's and in open stock, too! Great news for those of us who love the pencils. Wow how interesting to find all of this out! I have looked for these pencils for the longest time. I am so stoked they are coming to the USA! I am officially on a shopping freeze until I get my hands on these pencils!! Muahhhh!! I just a couple of weeks ago learned about St. Louis Art Supply and they are awesome! They sell some really great stuff and talked with someone the other day and he said since the COVID their business has really increased. Good news travels fast I guess. I've been lusting after the 150 set for the longest time, but held off due to the outrageous prices from third-party sellers, so this is incredibly good news. If they do get released in time for Christmas, I now know for sure what I want as a present.

I completely agree with you and I'm really watching out for the quality of my art supplies and where they come from now a days. I swear someone is getting a free box of pencils in the mail huh... why the complete u-turn? your saying wait for a box with a sticker on it and all is good? nothing different between the 2 products except a sticker. Lets me honest. If you could not get these in the near future you would still seek them the un-ethical way. Blick and those companies are huge. I mean huge retailers. They come under what you would call BIG BUSINESS. not your average mum and dad family art supply business. I would go as far to say i bet you still have your UN-ethically sourced pencils in your stash

Loved this video. I live in Brazil. And it will be so much easier to import Holbein Pencils from the US than from these ebay sellers. About 5 y ago I bought from them a small box of 12 pastel pencils. But I never bought the full range. I didn’t have the courage because you don’t really know where is coming from, right? So I was starting to buy at Jackson’s, but from Amazon.com or Blick is so much more convenient and cheaper. Well, not cheap exactly 😂 the conversion is killing me, but I love my Holbein materials. I’m always buying a gouache or a watercolor at Blick and growing my collection. Now I’ll add the pencils as well. =)

Jerry's Artarama is one of the authorized suppliers listed in this video. But don't suggest that their products are all ACMI-compliant, because they are not. Plus, if you order their products through Amazon, they refuse to provide customer service. You must go through Amazon. Yet Amazon has little service to provide other than a refund and exchange. An example of their non-compliance: I bought a 4-drawer wood pastel/pencil storage case by Creative Mark through Jerry's on Amazon. The strong smell from that box makes it the most awful and potentially dangerous art product I have ever purchased. As a result of the fumes it emanates, the product could NEVER have been approved by the ACMI. I called Jerry's, but since I ordered through Amazon, they merely said that the manufacturer (made in China, of course) did not allow the wood sealant to dry and cure properly before shipping to Jerry's. Since I did not purchase them directly from Jerry's, I should call Amazon. End of discussion, in spite of my complaint about potential health hazards. They actually hung up on me when I mentioned the potential health hazards. I see that many of their reviewers of the product also mentioned the terrible fumes, so they are certainly aware of the problem. Yet Jerry's still carries this product. So why are we to trust that Jerry's will only carry the ACMI-compliant version of Holbeins when they are released?

I bought three of these cases, and after three weeks of outdoor airing in sun, removing the foam liners, and placing baking soda inside the drawers, the smell lessened somewhat. I brought them into my craft room. I vacuumed out the baking soda and lined them with strong plastic shelf liner, and when the drawers are closed, the fumes no longer emanate. But open the drawer and I still strongly smell sealant. Plus, it still imparts a stink to the art supplies stored in the drawers. Since I bought these through Jerry's Amazon store, I have no recourse for complaint to them. However, I can warn you to NEVER buy these cases from them. And if you have a direct account with them, you should complain that they are carrying potentially toxic and non ACMI-compliant art materials.
