Personally I would leave it in place. Even with a darker finish it is still beautiful wood. After all it is an old house with different woods already in the kitchen. It’ll add to the character of the place. 😊

I love the Beech...I would leave it as it is.

To be honest, my gut feeling says leave it as it is, beech is much harder and will age more beautifully than pine… You have a vintage kitchen with a vintage table and chairs that will not be all the same… The slightly different colour of the beech top will fit in just fine.

I'm sorry for you Graham, for the extra work with the table top.
I think the table top can be used in the garden, as a table.
Or you can make yourself a coat rack for coats or umbrellas.

In the U.S. people choose to have the island completely different from the rest of the kitchen, different paint, different countertop, it's a thing here.

If the different color is going to be something that bothers you all the time, then your cutting boards might be a good idea. If you think it’s something you could get used to, then I would stick with what you have for the better durability.

I feel like I'm repeating what others have said. Shame to change such a beautiful top. Alternatively you could use them to make free hanging shelves on wall hy sink too. Just a few thoughts.

I have an kitchen island worktop which is totally different from the other worktops deliberate because it has a different function. TBH the whole island itself is a pain in the backside, it's filled with old paint pots a fondue set and teasmade [exactly] and no one uses it because the tall stools are uncomfortable, it's is in the way and stops the flow of movement so it's going to be re-purposed. My aunty will be able to use her Zimmer frame in the kitchen and I can dance from one unit to another. lol
