As someone who who has been changing my own oil since I was 16, newer cars with their skid plates have been the bane of my existence

Mechanic here, the reason changing your own oil could pitentially be more trouble than its worth is because you have to dispose of the oil properly after you remove it. It's illegal to throw it in the garbage so you need to take it to an auto store that's willing to accept it. Not super hard to do but can be a bit of a hassle to store it and bring it to the dealer

the hard part is trusting that support you put on😭

that's a lot of faith in those supports...

The only problem here is oil changes is how shops bring in customers, so they can add on other repairs. What has ended up happening is oil change prices are very competitive, so if you can find a good discount, sometimes you only end up paying $10 or so for labor after the price of the filter and oil.

Him dowsing the car in wiper fluid is definitely the best part 😂

As a girl who is NOT a mechanic, I'm changing the oil of my car by myself.

All that I can say is that I have a great dad.
Taught me everything he knew.

Everything you showed is exactly the reason why i don't change oil myself. I think every guy at one time in their life fantasized they could change oil, but after trying it a couple of times myself, and I even bought all the equipments, I decided its much cheaper to have someone else donit for me.

Disposal of all that oil is a factor too

Changing your own oil used to make sense when you actually could save money when doing it. Now it'll cost you just about a similar cost of a Walmart oil change.

Totally agree! I changed a flat tire and didn’t break a sweat. I just told the wife what to do as I didn’t want to chip a nail just got them done 💪

Another reason is if you get a vehicle second hand, the original owner, or whatever leasing company that isn't the most mechanically informed, may fuckup any part of the oil changing process. I have a used car that the drain plug for the oil resevoir was stripped from over fastening the nut.

I had to take that same car and get an oil drain puggyback plug put in just to make sure I have oil leaks. Now, anytime I have to have an oil change, it has to be siphoned out through the intake.

"Why aren't you changing you're own oil"
because I don't want to

A couple of reasons.
1) maintenance history. If you don’t take it a certified shop the manufacturer of the vehicle will get out of having to do any repairs that are under warranty.

2) don’t want to deal with the mess.

3) it’s almost the same cost if I just have a shop do it. They buy tons of oil and get a better price on so price is fair.

THe problem for me is disposing the oil after, just easier to let the auto shop do all the work, especially if I dont want to deal with a vehicle with a skid plate in the way.

Don’t reuse your crush washer, it’s called a CRUSH washer/seal for a reason. Even if it doesn’t leak, once it’s crushed it is weakened. Oil change kits from the manufacturer usually include a replacement one, so use it.

So as a mechanic there is a little correction I will say! There are many vehicles with oil filters above the oil pan and it is important to loosen the filter before even getting under the car and also make sure to pull out the dip stick. This is all about getting the air inside the system so the most amount of oil possible can exit the drain plug. Now for the washer, this is the most necessary part to replace. Reusing the crusher washer will cause oil leaks before your next change and nobody really wants that. And like the guy in the video said, it is only a few bucks, no big deal. AND THE LAST PART which is very important for when you’re changing your oil at home, is to know how much oil your engine carries and get containers that can carry more quarts of oil than what is recommended for your engine. Seen some dudes pull out ONE small bucket for their 6L of oil-carrying engines and it was a nightmare for them. This is nitpicky but I find necessary, hope this helps, save your money!
