Dagestan is situated in the North Caucasus of Eastern Europe, along the Caspian Sea, at the southernmost tip of Russia and sharing borders with Azerbaijan and Georgia.

The word Dagestan means "land of mountains". It is derived from the Turkic word dağ meaning "mountain" and Persian suffix stan, meaning "land of."

True to its name, Dagestan enchants travelers with the beauty of majestic peaks, along with thermal waters, sunny beaches of the Caspian Sea, and the delicious Caucasian cuisine.

It is also a breeding ground for world-famous wrestlers and fighters. A number of notable combat sports icons hail from Dagestan's mountainous terrain.

The republic is the most culturally diverse region in the Russian Federation, and in the Caucasus. Dozens of different ethnic groups share this land, with 14 holding the status of national languages. The last census showed the Russian population as only the 10th largest in Dagestan.

Located at the Caspian Gates between Persia and Europe, Dagestan has been of historic significance since antiquity.

Although plagued by a decade of conflict since the turn of the century, now for many years Dagestan has been a safe and attractive travel destination off the beaten path and not yet overrun by mass tourism.
