The visualization shows the landing sites of all six NASA spacecraft to reach Mars—Viking 1, Viking 2, Pathfinder, Spirit, Opportunity, Phoenix—and the target location where Curiosity will touch down on August 6, 2012.

Data collected by NASA's Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft was used to create the topography and surface color details seen here.

We've spent the last nine thousand years exploring our own rock, and there are still places no man has seen. We've been exploring Mars for the past 50 years. Exploration takes time.

The big X is to mark the intended landing location, as mentioned in the video description.

Most of the names are decided by public poll, believe it or not. That's how Curiosity got it's name. I believe that is how Spirit and Opportunity also got their names.

Would have been interesting to see all the probes represented, not only NASA's. Just for my broader knowledge.

It is surprising how small an area we've actually explored

Are they going anywhere near the Cydonia region? (;

I would be interested in it's power supply myself.

Shouldn't Pathfinder technically be Sojourner? The other points are labeled by rover/lander name and not mission name. I'm probably just nitpicking. Thanks for the video, at any rate:)

very optimistic names hahhaa how do they come up with them and what are they feeling (in terms of emotion) when they do

Aside from our Moon, it's the only planet we can land on with our current technology, and have any hope of the lander returning data. Titan is a long shot, as are Jupiter's moons,

My grandchildren will have a house right where curiosity landed.

I wish our technology was more advanced.
