Verdict: The Jeep Compass comes up big in way of standard features, but against its competitors, it doesn't push the envelope far enough.

Overview
The Jeep Compass doesn't offer the best of anything, but it does come standard with some of the biggest things compact-SUV consumers look for. For starters, every Compass has a 200-hp turbocharged four-cylinder, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive. Its starting price is easier on the wallet than some of its superior competitors, but they don't offer all-wheel drive as standard equipment. The Compass lineup ranges from a lowly Sport trim to the off-road-friendly Trailhawk that comes with lower gearing and a better turning radius to cater to light off-roading. While other compact crossovers like the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5 are more effective tools for performance, space, and driving, the Compass is an affordable alternative to the very best.

What's New for 2024?
Jeep doesn't change much for the Compass in 2024, but this small SUV does receive new appearance and equipment packages later this year. Jeep hasn't detailed what those will look like, but we'll update this space when that information becomes available. The front grille insert has been updated, and new 19-inch wheel designs will be offered later in the model's life cycle. The rugged Trailhawk gets a new all-terrain tire, too.

While we've previously suggested sticking with the most affordable Compass Sport due to its standard features, which includes all-wheel drive and a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, we think the extended features offered on Latitude Lux trim makes the Compass more livable. The Latitude Lux gets larger 18-inch wheels, but more importantly, it picks up a heated steering wheel, heated leather-trimmed front seats, remote start, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Unfortunately, the only standard paint color this trim offers is white. The five paid choices aren't all that interesting, either.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Every Compass is powered by a new 200-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four that also makes 221 pound-feet of torque. It's bolted to an eight-speed transmission, and all-wheel drive is now standard on all Compass models. Trailhawk models add a low "crawler" gear ratio and a Rock mode, which keeps the Compass in first gear and directs torque only to the wheels that can find grip. A trip to our test track proved that the turbo four offers the right amount of power for the Compass's compact frame, hustling the SUV to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds. The Compass feels more agile than its tall, boxy profile would suggest, responding ably to inputs, and the steering is nicely weighted but lacks road feel. There is some lean during tight cornering, but overall, the Compass feels well-controlled, solidly planted, and capable on the road. An off-road course we braved when we first drove the Compass revealed that it can hold its own at least over moderate obstacles, and we noticed nary a stumble from the all-wheel-drive system.

I’ve heard mixed reviews on quality and reliability. Those issues are problematic with Jeep. I’ve owned two and both had powertrain problems. One had power windows that repeatedly came off their tracks and jammed. Not impressed. Have people had better experiences recently? Why can’t Stellantis offer affordable and reliable products? They owe consumers an explanation of what they’re doing to improve. Is the problem management? Bad suppliers? Poor assembly? Or, maybe they just don’t care.
