Thanks for this concise video. @7:41 the point that ProTools considers outputs as "buses" it's super important to people coming from other DAWs - where outputs are considered just that, "outputs". ... I spent 15 minutes the other day trying to figure out why I couldn't hear anything! Thanks again for this video

Hey once again very good video. You can disregard my question, I actually found the problem. It was actually the setting of the usb midi thru in the sound module itself that wasn’t sending the signal to protools.

I hace a question on the Inserts part so bassicly i hace output 3-4 but i just hace 2 imputs how do i print? Because you said it has to come thru the same number so if is output 3 it has to clme on imput 3

Hey Dan just want to say I should’ve been checking your channel out way before now. A big thanks for all you for rookies like me. I’ve been in for about 8 years but still need advice and expertise from people like you. You are a God sent. Your approach is clear very precise in explaining and demonstrating the basics without all the flash and fireworks and self gratification. Keep up the good work I definitely will be hitting the subscribe bell.

I just learned how to figure out the delay compensation need to align the h/w components. So you take your pre-send to your hardware signal and send it to an audio track and record it. And then have your return signal coming from the hardware go into another audio track and record it.

Then go over to your edit window and stretch the waves out until you can see the distance between the first wave of the original signal, and the difference how long the delay is before the hardware signal difference. Put it into minutes and seconds in the top of the edit window and you can tell how many seconds it is which is 1000 milliseconds per second and then you can set your delay compensation
I'm glad I actually talked that out there for a second it might be a little clumsy but at least I know it better in my brain too I hope that helps you

Hey great video, I have a problem getting the midi indicator to see the key being struck from my midi keyboard which is connected to a sound module. So I’ll try to explain a little clearer. One day it worked fine in my protools then the next day nothing. I hear and get a track reading perfectly fine from the audio track and setup but all of a sudden the created midi track won’t read it. Protools and the Mac recognizes it according to the midi set up window. I have the input line of the midi track set to (All) and the output of the same midi track set to the sound module (Integra 7), I’ve made sure to arm it but no reading. Sound from the audio track but it’s apparently not coming from the midi trigger. Once again it was working great at one point then stopped. Protools see it but won’t put out the reading from the keyboard or module. Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks

Hi! I just purchased Pro Tools 2021. I have the MOTU 828 MK 3 and the MOTU 8 Pre. I'm trying to create a template called Drum Setup with eight mics (kick, snare, toms, overheads etc.) How do I set up the audio I/O?

If I have an audio interface with only 2 channels, is the output also limited to 2 channels?

My input channels have been selected as default and the interface has two inputs, which I can see are available in the i/o settings, but when I go to select input 1 rather than input 2 on my tracks, the only input option is "input 1 & 2" and they are not separated which means I can only record with one input, even though I have two. That might seem confusing, but if you know anything about that I'd appreciate the help.

hi, I recently purchased a focusrite scarlett 18i20 (mk2) and a behringer ada8200 for rehearsal room recordings. Somehow I can't seem to get any outboard gear working on the behringer ada8200. I think the problem is that the focusrite has 8 ins but 10 outs. 1+2 are for the monitors, outputs 3-4 + 5-6 match up with inputs 3-4 + 5-6 (and these work fine with outboard gear). then outputs 7-8 are for hp + ouputs 9-10 are for headphones too, but the problem is there are no inputs 9-10. that's when it starts to get complicated cause inputs and outputs do not match up anymore. inputs 9-10 are spdif. outputs 10-11 are spdif. when I then add the behringer ada8200 the inputs are 11-18 and the outputs are 13-20....so clearly they do not match up. In the Focusrite Control software all channels are set to "playback" (thru), for example channel 5-6 is set to "playback 5-6". only channel 1-2 (monitors), 7-8(hp)+9-10 (hp) are set to "playback 1-2" since that is the monitor mix. Since PT can only use the same output/input to insert outboard effects, how can I achieve this? do you have any idea on how do I solve this?

I have a quesiton about I/O, I bought a Zoom H8 to use as an interface and I can get signal from the xy capsule into pro tools, but I can't get a signal from any other input on the H8 (I do have the signal on the H8). I arm the inputs and have tried every possible I/O input on the track in Pro Tools...though they feel off as on the track interface it shows inputs as Mic 1-4 (1 is xy capsule), In 1-4, In A / In B.L (mono), In A / In B.R (mono), L / R.L (mono) and L/ R.R (mono). If you have any ideas as to what I could be doing wrong I would be grateful!

I watched the first few mins of your video until I reached the "output" set-up. When I click on the output tab of the I/O setup I have no output devices showing as you do. I'm using a MacPro laptop and I want to use the headphone output for sound out to my external speakers. Why can't I see the output devices. I'd shoot you a screenshot but can't attach here. Thanks

I would like additional information on outboard gear and routing within pro tools I/0. I have been attempting to use an external preamp/eq as an I/0 insert but have been unsucceful. Thanks

I'm new to pro tools and I was wondering how I can connect my Roland Integra 7 to print it from midi to audio. I connected the input 5-6 from my avid mbox studio to the output 1-2 from my integra. But I can't make midi to audio.

Bro can you please upload a video on duplicating a track 3 times and put plugins and than get 2 aux tracks and apply delay and reverb so all those 3 duplicate tracks have the same treatment please thanks

so with the new Apollo x16 (2 cascaded units) i want to basically have all the inputs as analog (no AES/EBU or virtual inputs) and have my outputs mostly analog but reserve 4 virtual outputs and 4 for cue and i want to mirror monitor 1 & 2 to the AWES/EBU output to feed my Grace M905 controller. I to also want more than 12 stereo busses, so the additional busses are internal to Pro Tools and have nothing to do with the Apollo units, correct?

I am using Pro Tools First, I don’t have I/O set under settings . Is that normal?
