When the guy slapped Burt's character with his glove that was a challenge to a duel most likely to the death which was the tradition, and on that particular tradition if of course the other person never showed up then he would have been labelled a coward for the rest of his life, this continued on in a way in school yards through out the twentieth century when one boy would challenge another boy to a fight after school, naturally not to the death but if the other boy never showed up he too would be labelled a coward, this was shown in another Burt's Lancaster film called The Kentuckian when His son must fight another boy or lose face,
