If I have an ESXi cluster with 6 hosts that runs many linux and MS VMs, can I pin the windows VMs to only 3 hosts and only license those 3 hosts or do I need to license all ESXi hosts in the cluster? Oracle EL requires all hosts in a cluster so wondering if this is similar to that.

Yes but there is a new, controversial, very poor documented feature available via the CSP subscription offering for Microsoft SQL Server which supposedly leverages some of the old software assurance features like license mobility via a monthly subscription. We've been going back and forth with our CSP partner advisors and burning cloud consults trying to figure this out because we have clients that refuse to go volume license but still need license mobility. We're still trying to figure this out.. Even Microsoft can give us a straight answer.
