Check out my podcast, Behind The Glass (The UK's Number 1 Automotive Podcast)

I spend the weekend with the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS and try to find out if it's worth all the hype.

From Porsche:
The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS is the new flagship model in the 718 family – an uncompromising driver’s car designed to impress with its lightweight construction, extremely agile chassis set-up, sophisticated aerodynamics and unique soundtrack.

Among the striking features of the new, top-of-the-range 718 are the process air intakes behind the driver and passenger windows. The 718 Cayman normally has small side windows here. The new air intakes improve both the intake airflow and, at the same time, create a thrilling intake noise right next to the occupants' ears. The characteristic air intakes in front of the rear wheels have been retained and are used for engine cooling.

Like every modern RS model, the new 718 GT4 RS is exclusively available with the Porsche dual clutch transmission (PDK). This gearbox shifts through its seven gears at lightning speed and guarantees maximum performance. The gearshift paddles allow drivers to keep their hands on the steering wheel even when changing gear manually. Alternatively, they can use the re-designed selector lever on the centre console.

The unique Porsche Design Chronograph 718 Cayman GT4 RS, created by Porsche Design exclusively for buyers of the vehicle, is as dynamic as its four-wheeled counterpart. The watch also benefits from a lightweight design concept with high-performance features based on the robust, high-tech characteristics of titanium. Its winding rotor is modelled on the sports car’s rims and can be specified in different colours, just like the car.

Sam, you really are next level at the moment mate. The content, the topics, the camera angles and quality alone are best on YouTube but your view of life and how you use and enjoy cars is soo inspiring. I’ve done so many driving holidays the last few years and enjoyed life soo much doing things inspired by you ……. More twiggy ;)

If an RS would be ideal as a daily, we would demand something more hardcore. Let’s keep the RS’es as toys, on and off track.
Great episode.

Man - your take on the visual appeal is EXACTLY what was going through my head as I was watching along - you verbalised my inner debate perfectly!
I genuinely cannot believe the quality of your videos that you achieve by yourself - honestly mind blowing…! Keep up the incredible work - amazing.

I love the subtleness of the GT3 Touring. I never fashioned myself a RS person either. That is until I started driving them. Now I find each of us has a bit of a different threshold for where that Jekyll and Hyde line sits. Although I love the aesthetics of the 911, the small intimate nature and near perfect ergonomic layout of the 718 interior just pulls and reminds you more of the older 911’s than the more bloated, current versions. I’m finding now that one should have a non-RS Porsche, as well as a RS one in the garage at all times. Heck, there are 7 days in a week—perhaps a different one for each day, right?🤦🏻‍♂️

Those downshifts at the 20:43 mark… OMG, I just cannot get enough of the sound! Really appreciate your perspective! I am turning Sixty today and am really looking forward to be a Hooligan!

I agree with you, but hands down, I'd take this over a GT3 (PDK) everyday. The only reason I'd choose the 911 is to have the manual. I'm over the whole "it's not a 911" thing. Mid-engined is just better, fact. I personally like the looks of the Cayman better, too.

This is the peak of casual automotive reviewing. Keep killing it STG

nice in-depth test. Unbelievable, 10 minutes before you went into the sound and the speed range, I had exactly the same thoughts. Incredible, like telepathy. I also feel that the range of the sound is relatively small, and then just before the end of the speed, for a speed window of maybe 500 revolutions, there is a peak in the sound that is really emotional. In my opinion it is also clearly too late, which means that you have to keep accelerating. With the Ferrari 360, for example, it opens from 3-4000 revolutions, which makes more sense for my emotions.

We just need to appreciate his filmography skills. He's not just a YouTuber with an iPhone, he puts so much time into the camera angles and shots to create beautiful footage

Before watching the video I’m wondering about your angle? Why on earth would you try to daily a GT4RS for a week? I picked up mine Friday and have done the 1500km break in period on Scandinavian B-roads during the last 3 days. Today 9000rpm was
unleashed and my hearing still suffers😂 The GT4RS is an absolute run riot heavy metal band on a leash at all times. The car was invented in 1886 with the Lohner-Porsche, and it ends with the GT4RS as the pinnacle of driving fun. Of course the coming 992GT3RS is faster and a lot more of a technological tour de force as it should be, but that just makes m case, and yours to loose. The Cayman GT4RS will out-fun any car on the planet any time. It’s surprisingly analog and hilariously old school.

BUT, during the 1700kms I’ve been doing since Friday in the GT4RS, so be learnt that the ride comfort is just excellent, and the seats are amazingly comfortable. I can even use the sport setting on the suspension for long durations if so desired. The 3 drawbacks with the car is except price and availability: 1) rear view limited. I could be having a cop trailing me and I wouldn’t know until the siren came on. 2) side view visibility, you need the co-pilot to give thumbs up in tight intersections. 3) tyre noise on bad road surfaces, but this is the same for the 911 also.

Motoring ends with the GT4RS. No need to look further, and compared to the coming GT3RS and Ferraris is actually a bargain!

Happy days❤

The ad was placed into the video so smoothly, not annoying at all. Enjoyed watching it. Great content

Amazing video Sam! Love the content here. But also amazing video work, nice smooth transitions and very very cool shots. Great in-depth test of the car and how it really is. T.b.h. I really really really want one now though... Keep up the great work with STG and BTG!

Nice attempt at a contrary point of view. But it’s an RS - I think we knew before your video that if you attempt to measure against criteria for which it was not designed, it might feel compromised. But measure it on great driving roads and on track and it’s epic. So the conclusion for me was obvious before you started. It was never intended as a daily driver nor is that why someone would buy it. Frankly I wouldn’t have a base GT4 as a daily driver either. AP says the 4RS was built as a fun car for road and track and they appear to have nailed that brief. My order is in and I’ll be keeping my X5 for daily driving duties.

Nice filming. You could make exactly the same argument about your new GT3, “really need to rev it out…a little too firm for the road…on track this thing would be fantastic…you have to drive this car like a hooligan”.

I have a ‘22 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 in Frozen Berry Metallic (I think there was a GT4 in the same color when you picked up the GT4 RS).
I daily drive her, but every weekend I’m up around 5:45 and take her out for a ride. Quiet roads, no urgency, just me and my car. Amazing
