I love that despite their "primitive look", they're actually quite derived, being within Neoaves. They convergently "re-evolved" their claws via an atavism, reactivating the "dinosaur claw" gene(s) that all birds likely have, but are typically not expressed. They're literally built different.

They're also the very last of their lineage! A very unique bird, and one of my favorites.

I would totally use this in a living dinosaurs section of a zoo.

Why do I want to keep it as a pet even though I know that's a dumb idea?

I know that all birds are basically dinosaurs but this bird just woke up and decided to take it much deeper than that

I still think cassowaries are the most Mesozoic-looking extant bird, followed close by shoebills

Ah yes, you bring up a bird where only the young have claws on their wings.

But I know ostriches have claws on *their* wings anyway. They just aren't visible beneath those wing feathers.

Hardcore Dinosaur fans, Please don't try to geneticly modify this animal to keep its claws in adulthood

It's coloration reminds me of the troodon from Walking with Dinosaurs.

This is actually quite interesting. I haven't, as of yet, seen any research done on prehistoric (non avian) dinosaurs using their claws to climb. It's an interesting concept I hope can be explored

Fun fact: Despite looking saurid, these guys are actually fairly new on the evolutionary scene. Ducks are actually more closely related to dinosaurs. They were one of the first birds to appear in the late Cretaceous, meaning they existed alongside allosaurus and other therapods.

Moorhen chicks here in the UK also have claws. You will sometimes see them clambering through dense vegetation up river banks with them

I'm from Guyana 🇬🇾 these birds are our national bird and pretty commonly seen if you find yourself up one of our main rivers, they're pretty cool and pretty smelly too! 😅

they actually keep their claws into adulthood, they are just smaller and obscured by the feathers
