VMS Offroad - How To Convert GPX Files From Google Earth

This video tutorial shows how you can convert GPX files after you make some route planning on Google Earth into VMS files, so you can use them on your VMS Navigator.

Another hour trying all sorts of combinations / methods/steps and I FINALLY got it to work! Firstly, DO NOT START with a GPX file made from Garmin BASECAMP imported into Google Earth (Bugger, that's a shit! All my Tracks are in Base Camp). Start from scratch with a 'Path' MADE IN Google Earth from scratch. Place the GPS Babel converted KML file into \vms\gpx\ folder _NOT_ "\vms\gpx\route(s)"! This is the first time in 4 years I have seen my imported file show up in the Route List. Woo-Hoo, sorta. Still means I have to hand make all my Garmin BaseCamp GPX files AGAIN in Google Earth from Scratch when Google Earth imports the Garmin BaseCamp files quite fine. Buggered if I know what it's carrying from the Garmin file through the export and GPS Babel conversion that makes the VMS not even see it as a valid GPX file, when Garmin Base Camp is NATIVE GPX! Garmin invented the GPX format! So it's obvious the VMS 'version' of GPX is a fair bit different from the Garmin version of GPX. Anyway, I have about 100 hours of Google Earth 'Path' making in my future....or I spend more time and try and find just what it is that VMS GPX files don't like about Garmin GPX to Google KML converted files and do some hand editing?

So when you open up GpsBable, in the output formal I hear you say GPS KML, but the only option available on the drop down list is GPS XML.... could this be the reason it is not showing up on the portable navigation device?

YEP it works fine.downloaded heap of tracks for my trip to WA.

So, did everything EXACTLY the same except this time just more points and a longer track. NOTHING. Then I even tried creating a Route using the GPS, then taking out the SD card and copying the contents of my "Long track" (560 points) GPX file, pasting it into the file created by the GPS (overwriting what was there, and....the GPS still loaded with the OLD Route data! WTF? How can it do that! That old data is GONE, overwritten...it's no longer in that file! It's midnight and I've now spent another 5 hours trying to get this to work and I am now even more confused than when I started. But it's obvious this GPS is NOT just reading the data in those files....it's caching/converting, something. You can't just replace the entire contents of a file with other data, including names, descriptions, number of points, and yet somehow it still loads the OLD data! There's more to this than simply copying a file to the SD card.

I've been trying for 4 years to get this to work, and you will note the video DOES NOT show the unit loading the route files in a GPS! It ends after copying the files to the SD card! I have MULTIPLE support calls in where they claim "It works, don't know what YOU are doing wrong". Umm, I was a network and server engineer for 18 years. This is a 'doddle' to me, but IT DOESN'T WORK! I'm trying again tonight and I can see the TEST_rte.gpx files I make by using the GPS unit, and they are NOT in the 'route' folder, they are saved in the 'GPX' folder....and another thing I have just noticed tonight, my folder is '\VMS\GPX\route' NOT 'routes' as in the video, which in the IT world is enough to make a difference.

For nearly 2 hours tonight I have been trying again and no matter what a do, "Route List" only shows the two routes I created with the GPS itself. I even made a "\VMS\GPX\routes" folder and copied all the GPX files to there too. I even copied a pure Garmin GPX file as well, straight out of BaseCamp, but still nothing.

Mr Shaka, do you have a 700HD/HDs or a different model?
