The gentle leader has been an amazing tool for me! I rescued a 95lb pit bull who had a bad habit of pulling! Soon he has the idea of loose leash walking and we switched to the flat collar. I am a trainer myself and I am looking to use him as a demo dog but he gets overly excited and pulls around other dogs so when we work on his skills in public we have been using the gentle leader again. Once he is comfortable ignoring the other dogs and focusing on me I will switch him back to his flat collar.

I’ve used a slip chain, gentle leader, flat collar and martingale. Slip chain helped with pulling she learned very fast with it. Gentle leader helped with heeling. We are struggling on a flat collar so we moved to a martingale because it is a mix between the slip chain and flat. It is helping quite a bit.

The gentle leader works right out of the box. We were fostering a 50 lb. border collie who had never walked on leash before. As long as I had treats available, he would heel but otherwise would run to the end of the leash and yank. I was frustrated that I was not more successful with walking him and the week that he was to be adopted, I finally bought a gentle leader. I walked him twice that day. The first time went so well right from the beginning that I walked him a second time with our dog - which I had never been able to do before. We have since gotten a little puppy and as soon as she gained confidence, she started pulling. As soon as I put the gentle leader on her and rewarded non-pulling behavior, our walks were excellent right away! Highly recommend it but you still need to reward good behavior on leash. Even our little puppy will pull on the gentle leader.

I always keep a flat collar on my dog, but I hardly ever use it for a lead, it just holds his tags. I started with the Gentle Leader front hook harness to help with pulling, seemed to help quite a lot. I moved to a back clip harness and everything was going pretty well. Since I got the new puppy, he's had a little relapse in his training and started to pull more, which I guess I can't blame him for. I went back to the front hook, however he still pulled quite a bit with that one as well. I purchased the head halter after watching your video about them the other day. He adjusted to it fairly quickly, walked out of the store with it on, and only has some crazy fits when he wants to pull. However I do find it to work really really well, just think its important for people to realize that its a training tool and not something to use forever.

One word of caution though... My trainer is not anti head halter but she doesn't really care for them. She had a dog stomp on the leash which resulted in the dog pile driving its nose into concrete. So just really keep that in mind when getting your dog adjusted, might also want to go with a 3' lead vs the typical 6' to avoid the dog stepping on it.

I had to use a prong collar on my 2 dogs for beginning training. My older adopted dog was aggressive towards some men and would go after cats. I have corrected these behaviors so I am going back to his harness that he likes. My other was a puppy and would do puppy freaks on walks and would slip out of leaches. She hated the gentle lead. Now she is on a flat collar which she prefers. Only use prong collars in very crowded places for better control. I do not allow meet and greets. I had an aggressive BC and now it is just engrained in me.

Hello! I have an 80 lb rambunctious Anatolian Shepherd mix. She will be 4 soon and I still cannot walk her. She’s too strong and pulls way too much. I’m going to try the head collar this weekend.

I use 2 different types of gentle leaders and a harness that clips in the front of the dog. To train my 3 dogs.

Was sagen Sie zum Canny Collar? Mir gefällt, dass man es schnell als Halsband umbauen kann, wenn man den Hund in den Freilauf schickt. Entschuldigen Sie bitte, mein Englisch ist nicht gut. Ich finde ihre Videos mit Übersetzung toll. Great job 👍

In Brazil, we have a kind of collar (I don't know if it's a collar, because it isn't placed on the dog's neck, but on their chest). This kind of leash prevents that the dog pulls his owner. I think it's pretty nice. In portuguese we call it "Peitoral anti-puxão" ou "Peitoral invertido"

What about the martingale collar? Is it considered a training collar? If so, how would it be incorporated into training?

Honestly, walking a dog on a flat collar scares me, especially while training. I have dogs with heads that are smaller than, or at least very close to, the size of their necks. So even when fitted properly, it's only their ears keeping the collar on. My dogs are skittish and if they get spooked on a walk I'm worried they could easily pull out of a flat collar. Instead I use a martingale collar, so if they get scared while on leash I feel like they can't pull out of it as easily. I think it's more of a peace of mind thing at this point that makes me use martingales, I haven't ever had a dog pull out of one. They should be fitted differently than a flat collar for sure, I think looser to start so that when the dog pulls it doesn't choke them, which makes them harder to keep high on their neck. But, I think the peace of mind is worth the bit of hassle to keep the collar high on their neck for training purposes.
I also really like the gentle leader, but I find it's one of the hardest tools to get the dog used to.

I'm a little confused.... is using a harness not okay to do when training? We are getting our little boston terrier in several weeks, and I am prepping to do/buy everything...I had planned on getting a harness because they are so little.... am I making a mistake with this??
