Arlo are expensive but there's no charge for storing up to 7 days of footage in the cloud, you can also hook up a USB dongle for local storage (in case internet is down), and you can also download the footage to your PC or device to save it off if it's important footage.

I’m not gonna lie, our family has a nest cam, and I can fully understand your issue. It costs too much on its own, and that subscription shouldn’t be a thing. It’s literally just a camera that records footage in your device, hell, you may as well just use your phone or tablet! So to anyone reading this, DON’T. BUY. A. NEST. CAM.

Did this a few years ago and it is awesome! I even receive Gmail alerts when motion is detected by my camera. I also used a similar setup for my bird feeder, making bird watching super easy.
