Did you know adult opossums actually can’t hang by their tails? Only young opossums can, as they reach adulthood they just become too heavy.

Honestly I never imagined rats having prehensile tails but now that I am I am horrified. I had a rat growing up, he was such a sweet boy but imagining him being able to grab stuff or hang from his tail… Butterscotch would have been the cutest little emissary of chaos.

Their tails feel like velvet when you pet down the tail, a bristly beard when you pet up the tail.

it’s so strange to me that the reason folks are afraid of/grossed out by rats is because of their tails not having hair. i have news for them about almost their entire bodies.
(yeah humans are technically covered in hair but rat tails have hair too, it’s just thinner)

I have a little brood of mice, and they do the same things rats do. Although sometimes they curl their tails around my fingers when I pick them up to give them their checkups. They're so cute

Regarding their tails and body temperature: Lots of mammals use long bald or thinly haired extermities to control body temperature. Hares, elephants, and long eared dogs will flush their ears when hot to use them as radiators. But rats and mice are so tiny their ears don't have enough surface area to act as an effective radiator. So the tail is one of the few options they have for this trick.

I love rat tails so much, they're so adorable. My rats used to smack me in the mouth with their tails while they were balancing on my shoulders.

Rats have tiny scales on their tail, which are (according to my LIMITED research) used for protecting the tail, however the tails don’t feel scaly due to the little hairs on the tail, and the scales being really small and not slimy or anything. Their scales look and feel a little like flakes of skin.

Especially babies' tails, they're soft, silky and kissable 🥰 And the way rats hug each other with their tails is heartbreaking adorable.
