It’s time for another U.S. round of Formula E - and this year, it’s happening on our home turf of Portland Oregon.

Before the race however, we got to sit down with Bob Stojanovic from race sponsors ABB and chat about some of the challenges facing the EV charging industry this year, from the sudden transition to NACS, battery-supported EV fast charging in rural areas, and much more.

I have audio no problem. Likely those who couldn't hear anything were experiencing early-after-upload YouTube issues.

This is a really informative interview. Thanks so much for putting this up!

Nice interview. I hope that there will be more numerically and more reliable charging stations along highways, especially in rural areas so that road trips will be easier in the future.

Great interview, Nikki! I just drove up from the L.A. area to Vancouver WA in my 40 kwh Leaf, so this subject has been on my mind!

Asea Brown Boveri (ABB), a Swiss-Swedish conglomerate of BBC (Brown Boveri Company) and Asea which merged back in the late 80s, is operating right here out of Mannheim, Germany. A town close to where I currently live. My dad worked for that company for almost 40 years.

1:40 - ABB guy was wrong. Formula E has been to Long Beach, California before for two years, 2014-2015 season and 2015-2016. (Plus New York and Miami as the only other US cities to host. Portland is now the fourth, second on the West Coast.)

We had a Renault Zoe with only AC charging, for four years and over that period we saw new operators come along that were CCS and Chademo only, and as networks upgraded from 50 kWh chargers to 150/350 kWh they removed the 44kWh AC and often all AC charging. It made route planning interesting.
It worrying for owners of older cars.

Wow, great to see you at Formula E. I hadn’t paid it much attention before, but found myself burning the midnight oil and flicked over to Channel 4 to find E coverage about to start.
A great watch. Those teams cut it closer to rolling in on 0% than Tesla Bjorn or Matt from
Car wow combined!

Ti-Lane Precision Electronics company offers CCS1, J1772, CCS2, and Type2 charging connectors. Furthermore, we are actively developing products that comply with the NACS standard. We have plans to complete the NACS Tesla Level 2 AC fast charging connector and Level 3 EV DC supercharging connector by the end of August 2023

Great interview but I felt he was hedging with his answers in term of long term support for CCS and chademo.
It causes me concern for the future viability of these cars, my car, for the future charging availability.

Future of US EV charging. There fixed it for you.

I didn’t realise that FE had started already! Need to check if channel 4 is showing it showing again here in the UK.

Until a standards organization certifies it, NACS = Not A Charging Standard. I feel like Tesla renamed it precisely to get managers not in the know in large companies to start talking about it. It was a smart, but underhanded move.

You call it "game the system", I call it help the grid. Batteries for car chargers ideally would work like grid storage batteries like the megapack, AND be used to buffer EV charging to lower their payback time, and increase resiliency.
