I think it's worth mentioning the Bloodstone Emperor of The Great Empire of the Dawn (modern Yi-Ti) discovering a black stone that fell from the sky, and the long night beginning relatively closely. It's possible the deep ones & to a lesser extent, the others, are some form of extraterrestrial life.

Also, Cthulhu himself is referenced in Fir and Blood by the guy (I’m bad with names) that sailed into the sunset sea and said his ships were attacked by a Kraken with man arms.


I’d say the ASOIAF “Cthulhu” is the drowned god itself. But I’m sure this will be left eternally ambiguous unless the property gets tossed around to other writers after GRRRM passes through this mortal coil.

Anyone unfamiliar with Lovecraft can read GRRM doing a great Lovecraft impersonation in Fire and Blood with the story of Aerea Targaryen and the Firewyrms. It’s my favorite excerpt of the book thus far and it is spot on Lovecraft. I say “impersonation” not as an insult. This specific section is dead on with the prose and format, especially when it transitions to the Maester’s direct account of the story. I highly recommend.
