This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander 3-row SUV versus the 2022 VW Tigaun 3-row compact utility.
The Mitsubishi Outlander is a 7-passenger vehicle, the Tiguan has the option of both 5 or 7-passengers which is quite unique for the compact crossover category. The 3rd row in Canada is $800 CAD on all trims. In the US, it is standard on FWD models, there is no 3rd row option on AWD trims.

The Tiguan and Outlander are about the same length, but the Outlander offers an extra 1.5” of front legroom and over an inch more second row space. Comparing the 7-seater Tiguan with the Outlander, they are very close in cargo space behind the second and 3rd rows, but the Outlander wins in overall cargo capacity.

The Outlander has a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine matched with a CVT with super all wheel control. It has 181 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque. The Outlander also offers a PHEV, the 2022 model has a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine with 39 km of EV range. The 2023 Outlander PHEV will be arriving later this year with an EV range of 87 km on the WLTC testing cycle, the EPA range has not been released but typically the EPA range is lower.

The Tiguan has a 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission, 184 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. Standard AWD in Canada but in the US there are both FWD and AWD options.

The Outlander gets better fuel economy at 9.7L/100 km, 24 MPG city
and 7.9L/100 km/30 MPG highway. The VW 10.6L, 22 MPG city and 8.0L, 29 MPG highway.

The Outlander can tow 2,000 pounds, the Tiguan 1,500 and the Outlander offers more ground clearance, 8.3”, the Tiguan 7.6”.

The Outlander is a 7-passenger vehicle and offers a beautiful interior winning Wards ten best interiors award. Compared to the previous model, the cabin is quieter, Mitsubishi added double pain acoustic front door glass to eliminate vibration and noise. The thicker steering wheel has a more natural feel to it, engineer’s added dampers to reduce steering vibration. The Outlander comes standard with heated front seats, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a 7” information display, an 8” touchscreen, push button start, remote key-less entry, cloth upholstery and manual driver and passenger seats. In the US, the heated front seats are standard one up from the base model.

All trims, but the base model on the Outlander get a heated steering wheel, a hands-free power lift-gate, wireless charger and a panoramic sunroof. A 9” touchscreen with wired Android Auto and wireless Apple Carplay are standard two up from the base model. In the US, there are a few differences, the larger touchscreen is standard one up from the base model, the panoramic sunroof is available in a package on that trim and the heated steering wheel is in a package on the SEL trim.
The top two trims is where you’ll find those extra features like a 12.3” digital driver display, heated rear seats, quilted leather appointed seats a 10 way power driver’s seat and a power passenger seat. The top trim has a head up display and the Bose sound system. In the US, you can add packages on the lower trims to get some of these features.

The Tiguan interior got a refresh with upgraded materials, new interior colour options with available two-tone leather and a third row for $800 CAD. This Volkswagen comes standard with a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, cloth upholstery, a Volkswagen digital cockpit with an 8-inch instrument cluster, a 6.5” touchscreen and Apple Carplay and Android Auto, key-less access and push button start.

I’d go with the Outlander because of more cargo room, better looking interior (subjective), somewhat higher MPG, good resale value, and better engine reliability as per JD Power. From all the car mechanics and Lube Techs I’ve spoken to, the general advice was to stay away from German cars due to the poorer engine reliability compared to their Japanese competitors. Nonetheless, Mitsubishi should consider removing the CVT component in their engine as consumers are suggesting and catch up with the current auto industry. As always, great video you two!

I love this kind of out of the box comparison. Not everyone have to go to RAV4, CR-V or Rogue which are mainstreamers in Canada's biggest segment. Its truly a breath of fresh air for Mitsubishi to come out with something brilliant under Nissan alliance. But because of the iffy dealership network in Canada. I might have to choose VW. Tiguan remains a more driver oriented SUV.

I'd take the Outlander all the everyday it's unique and stands out.

i love both, but prefer outlander, for everyday, even with this cvt, the outlander is better. Leaving in Canada and lot of snow, both are good but s-awd of Mitsubishi is better too. Im getting the outlander phev as soon as it comes to Canada. We had Mitsubishi in our familly, all of them were amazing and lasted more than 10 years without issue.

No nonsense review, straight to the point. Love it! I think this is the first real comparison between the Outlander and Tiguan that I've come across on YouTube. Congrats!

I agree with Andrea on the interior. Outlander grabs me more. I'm usually a Tiguan fan boy but I really like this Mitsubishi. It's quite good.

Excellent review, great comparison and get points for both. Still I take the Outlander just by the looks inside and out plus that unbeatable warranty. Love seeing the reviews away from the mainstream segment leaders. Great to show off the alternatives and what they can offer.

Great review & really appreciate you mentioning the Phev models that are way better in my opinion. Also your support for Phev's is fantastic after Zack's trip to Japan. I recently bought a 2020 Outlander Phev that was a demo with 2600km that only cost $41990 in Perth W.A. This is by far the best car I've owned including a 2018 Prado GXL & 2020 Hybrid Camry that was too small & not a good family car unlike the Phev. You hardly ever need fuel & lately have been charging for free at local shopping centres & beach carparks which is a phenomenal feeling. I owned a 2014 Outlander Phev for 4 years & regretted selling it so now am stoked to have the newer model with slightly larger 2.4l engine & bigger 13.8kwh battery. Once the battery is dead I still have over 550km of range so is the best of both worlds & you can travel to regional areas without massive range anxiety. The instant EV torque is addictive, super quiet, quite fast & the regenerative paddles are unbelievable especially going down steep hills, approaching traffic lights or when someone locks up in-front of you. I have 20 solar panels on my roof & charge mostly in the arvo with a home charger I installed. We rarely get electricity bills - mostly get credits. My commute is 25km each way so usually get home with a few kms of EV range remaining. Once you drive a PHEV you realise just how good they are & don't want to go back to an ICE or hybrid car again.

I think the Outlander is the more stylish, by far. Inside and out! But the Tiguan is definitely more ‘my style’. Thanks for another comparison video.

I like the new Outlander, looks good and has improved considerably but for me the engine/gearbox isn’t up to scratch. Volkswagen I’ve always liked and here in New Zealand you get a range of motor options including one with the GTi motor and very soon the Tiguan R which naturally has the Golf R motor and trick diff 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

VW/Audi guy here but the Outlander looks far more upscale than the Tiguan on the exterior and the interior. The Tiguan may be a better vehicle overall but it is just bland looking and uninspiring. I would take the Outlander.

Outlander is the better choice out of these two and overall in the budget sub compact segment IMO, but I am waiting for new cr-v before making a decision.

I really appreciate the way you guys break down the trim levels and the differences btw the US and Canada. This makes a huge difference and something that other reviewers do not do as well.

Both wearing red...Oh! No! To be honest I didn't notice until you mentioned it. I did however, notice Andrea's endearing smile when she looks at Zack. So sweet.
Ok, back to your review. Very positive, well balanced review with real world information drivers and owners would want, or need to know. Also busting myths with reference to transmissions that may have had historical issues.
Love watching your channel.

I like both, but prefer the Outlander. The exterior styling it’s rugged and modern.

In Australia the Outlander Exceed Tourer which is the top of the line model comes with massaging front seats, space saver spare tire and a factory blacked out roof

VW sells two models of the Tiguan in my country, with the All Space being the 7 seat version. It has the 1.4L TSI engine for the FWD base trim, and has 2.0L AWD with 7 seats for the top two trims. A nice looking vehicle

I kinda agree with Andrea. 6.5 inch is no way a base trim standard for 2022. It should start from 8 inch and can go up for upper trims. Also, Tiguan’s central console is kinda narrow & sit lower in the ground. Center console storage is super poor. The materials are great but I tried so much to love the interior but couldn’t. Also the seatbelt connectors are exposed & kinda ugly in Tiguan. Loved the exterior though. I think Zack might be a little biased about the Tiguan. Anyone would agree a facelift in 2022 should not have a 6 inch screen for base model. None of the other same sized vehicles has something like that. Specifically the ones got recent facelift. Great comparison btw 🙌
