That's the best template for a kick serve! Thanks for the analysis Florian. Always great videos and tuitional material!

The 2 very key points are missed in the video! The racquet path! It is completely different from the flat serve. Without correct racquet path you can toss the ball wherever you want, make point of contact however you want but you will not get top spin on the serve! The racquet path goes up and circle around parallel to the base line. In order to do that your body has to stay sidewise during the serve.

Seems you're leaving out a key component - he makes contact before the racquet is fully extended. This is the hard part that I wish you would talk about.

Good afternoom! I am form Brazil, and my apologies for do not have a good English, but better than my serve, I am trying to learn how to perform a kick serve. But for me it is harder when I am at the deuce court. And most videos I watched on it are at the advantage court. Another dificult that I have is to watch the ball after the toss. I would apriciate if have a deeper analysis of this serv at the deuce court. Congratulations for your videos. I give your deserved congratulations!

Nice, clear analysis showing how easy and elegant it is to hit the serve this way.  So, I who knows when I'll ever master

I have to say no way a 2 minute explaination cannot do Federer justice. A full analysis can take up to an hour if not multiple hours. I have been personally trying to copy his kick serve and still learning new things after months of daily practice.

"not as far to the left as people think". Yes I only understood that when I realised the point of contact is when the racket is around 45 degrees, so the ball has to be slightly further left than on a flat serve. I found remembering that 45 degree angle meant everything else followed.

Great on kick serve perhaps stress the need for racket head speed also.

Great explanation as usual Florian. This is why I'm a member on your site and love the OTI Plus sections for getting super good.

Some players toss far into the court on their kick serve, Rodger actually tosses closer into his body than a lot of the other ATP player do. Also, this example of Rodger tossing directly over the head is one example but you can see other examples where Rodger is tossing much more to the left so that if the ball were to land it would be over his left shoulder.

Great video with excellent commentary.  I'd like to know how far into the court Fed's toss is.  I noted that the ball traveled what appeared to be about 1-2 feet over the net which may indicate that he hit the ball well into the court on his toss.  Is this correct?

The ball contacts the strings near the top edge of the racquet. Does the ball then actually brush across and make contact with  more of the strings as compared to a flat serve? i.e., is that what creates the "Click" sound heard on kick serves?

Really like your breakdown of his kick serve.  Could you provide an analysis of the slice serve, especially to the duce court?  I see how some of the top players (right handed) use it to set up an easy winner to the ad court.  And how Rafa uses it to dominate on the ad side.  I'm right handed.  This is also a very effective serve in doubles

The video doesn't mention you should use a grip closer to a backhand grip for kick serves. I was also curious if you are in favor of a deep knee bend on both first and second serves. I know in your serve videos you say to use less legs. Thank you. I love your instructional videos.

Oh you forgot about one thing: He makes contact with the ball a little further to the left than he does with his first serve however not as far to the left as most people would think.
