On today’s episode I want to talk about being pregnant in a foreign land. Being pregnant in Germany was actually one of the big reasons why I chose to leave the US to come to the Land of Beer and Pretzels - so let’s talk about the why!

Dear Lady
Now i am a grumpy 62 years german.
Now still working until the age of 66, 6 sure i do pay taxes. Now i am bavarian and i love the way german taxes pay back. Mothers are holy, so are their children. So if my tax money is helping a mother and their children, i am happy. no matter where they come from no matter colour religion its just a human instinct to support mothers and children.
BTW Roxie is a really cool name 😊😊

One reason why maternal mortality in Germany is still very high, is that the average age of primiparous women is rising. On average they were in 2019 30.2 years old (USA 26.3, Canada 28.3). The average age at birth was 31.6 years. The risk for both mother and child increases with age.

About parental leave (Elternzeit): You can take those 36 months up to the childs 8th birthday, just the first 12 months have to be taken in the first 3 years. This comes in very handy when the child starts school, so you can take some time to get that going. Of course the parental allowance (Elterngeld) covers only 14 months between both parents (plus bonus, but those details would blow this comment up)

I am german and when my wife has been pregnant we went to a "Hebammenpraxis" (=midwife-praxis). That was the best descision. Both of us went there and we were teached in the whole process of birth. That took a lot of pressure from our shoulders because we now knew what will gonna happen. Furthermore we knew that one of the midwifes of this organisation will go along with us during birth. I only can recommend this !

Even though many won't see the hospital bill, since the cost is billed directly to the insurance carrier, the average cost is lower. (Average costs "standard birth" approx. 3200€, "cesarean birth" approx. 6800€. ) Oh yes, and the 10€ co-payment per day in the hospital seems ridiculously low.
There is even a statistic from Sweden or Norway that proves that maternity protection and parental leave reduce the following problems, among others: maternal and child mortality, postpartum depression.

Great to hear you'll have a village to support you! Giving birth is not a small thing even if everything goes smoothly, let alone if it doesn't.

You know, if you are working in a job which might endanger the baby, you get your maternal leave even earlier. Sometimes as soon as it is clear that you are pregnant, ie if you work with chemicals.

Anyway, congrats...as soon as the baby is born, you should look for daycare. So that you are on the waiting list early enough.

If movies are to be believed (and many people telling me that it is indeed like it's shown in the movies) then the birthing process is very different as well. In the US the mother gives birth on her back with her feet up in the air. While in Germany she gives birth however it feels good. Usually squatting or on her hands and knees.

But I hope that at least birthing positions have become more varied in the US as well.

Joe Rogan said something like this on his show, something like nobody needs this much time, the father does not have to have time off because he is not giving birth, why would an employer agree to that and that this is not normal. His female guest said it is normal in Germany and he said that this is why the German economy is so bad. He then said something like "this America, this better".

The land of beer and bretzels is not as bad as described in US media when it comes to healthcare and doctors? No way! LOL😃⚕️👍

Typical German, I won’t congratulate yet (maybe for making it this far, since too many people have problems conceiving and getting to 13 weeks), but I wish you all the best for the rest of the pregnancy, birth and time with your child!

Um, actually the plural of Liebling is Lieblinge, not Lieblings. German nouns are not so regular to just stick an s on the end and get away with it. 😅 But enough GerMANsplaining. 😂
Take good care of yourself, visit your doctors regularly, and have fun at the birthing classes. 🙂
