In silent/small builds sometimes you don't have that luxury, thus you rely on air pressure. If you only suck air from outside in, the inside air will be forced out of openings passively. Similarly if you only exhaust air with a fan, outside air will be sucked in from vents passively. It isn't as good as having both, but it is still doable. If you want a steam machine twice it's size just for an extra fan then build one.

Won't it depend on the after market cooler though?

The key concept, though, is that it is modular, meaning anyone can switch out the HDD for an SSD if they want to, without breaking/voiding anything.

I believe there are some after market water blocks that are compatible with it if you wish to water cool which would be a better option than a heat sink.

Note: it also trades blows with the 780. and the ti is untested.

This is very true but you have to remember that when it comes to console gaming (which the steam machine is competing against) people have already made the decision of paying for a pre-built product as opposed to putting the time and effort into building a computer. The fact that there will be a varied range of specs and prices for pre-built steam machines means that the platform will be more accessible to more people hopefully.

Basically it's a GPU that's designed to use it's cores for very unique purposes, like running simulations faster than a processor can; The kinds of things normal consumers never use but various industries need. The Titan is meant as sort of an entry-level compute card, because the next higher ones up cost several thousand dollars each. Even though the Titan and 780 are on the same card and perform similarly in games, the 780 doesn't have anywhere near the amount of compute power.

It took us long enough to finally figure out how to compress a relatively powerful rig into a small, console-shaped box for our living rooms! :P

Guys, there's more than one steam machine. You can configure them as much as you want. The GTX TITAN is a pretty big card, so they're showing that it can fit in there.

One of many prototypes at that. They are making tons of different types of consoles for different groups of people.

You can build your own and there won't be just one steam box. There's different companies vetted to produce ones at different tiers and price points, with hardware verified by valve to have the official steam box label.

the Titan was used probably to show how upgradable it can be. most likely the finished product will have something along the lines of a GTX 760. then again if Valve buys in bulk all the components they might get a good discount, but in the end profits are meant to be made in software sales (games).

And this is why you need to patent something as soon as you come up with an idea. I thought and drew up one of these a while ago and was planning on building over the winter. The dimensions were 12"x12"x3 3/4" and had a titan and an i7. I guess i can still build it though.

This looks awesome! Although I have a gaming rig and probably won't buy one of these, it's really cool to see they are blurring the lines between PC and console. Go Steam!

Love it. It's a small gaming Desktop with steam big picture mode hard coded. Pretty much what a console should be.
