People put very different meanings into the phrase "very different". I study standard Chinese and a little Cantonese and I see that they have a lot in common. Yes, the phonetics are different, the words are about 50/50, the grammar is almost identical. Cantonese speakers like to exaggerate the differences in order to emphasize their "uniqueness".

Nah I’m pretty sure Mandarin and Cantonese are both dialects, kind of like how “Indian” language.
