When I was hard up, I started asking for grocery store gift cards. People loved it. It was easy for them and I could buy myself either staples or treats (like meat). When things got better, but still not great, they started giving me gift cards for my favourite coffee/doughnut shop, which meant a lot to me. And when I was a starving university student, my mother gave me a shoe box full of basic toiletries as one of my xmas gifts. A lot of people think that was weird, but I still think that was the most thoughtful gift she ever gave me.

This looks good! Having a full pantry has never been more important. Cost, world conflict or climate linked food shortages. No hording or panic buying necessary just a sensible approach to staying stocked.

As a thank you for pet and house sitting while our family holidayed in France, our daughter and son in law bought us a home made hamper of locally produced foods. Olive oil, herbs, mustard, lentils in a posh tin, wine, marzipan treats and most appreciated a bottle of French lemon washing up liquid 😂. I totally agree a usable gift of food etc is much appreciated.

Loved this video. Thanks Jane and Mike, you help me stay on track! My partner and I moved countries a few months ago (to my home country) and I've had to re-learn how to shop here. We live a five minute walk from our grocery store, and I realised this month, that I was shopping way too often and impulse spending. Also going to way too many different shops to get certain deals, although it just led me to shop too often. This month I almost halved our food spending by only going to one store, basing our meal plan around their offers, shopping once every five days or so (we have to carry everything home) and batch cooking once a week. I spend way less time cooking and shopping and we've saved a lot!

Hi Jane! This is one of the best, rational, well thought out advice I've heard on YouTube in regards to stocking up. What an excellent video! So much good information here. Well done! Thank you!

Thank you for this timely reminder on eating appropriately.
I’m the same age as you. I turn 60 in February next year, and I’ve noticed I now feel awful eating certain foods I loved before, especially supermarket breads and anything sweet.
Time to look at a better diet.

Love the birthday idea! One of my favourite anniversary gifts ever was when my husband got me four pounds of butter that was on sale!

I’m glad I had food in my freezer and cupboards because I had a nasty fall on Monday and I’m on crutches. I can’t drive or walk to the shops but I had essentials to hand.

Thank you for this advice Jane. For British viewers, Sainsburys have good Nectar prices on tinned soup at the moment. This vlog inspired me to have a good stock up, as on a wet miserable winter day, tinned soup makes a quick and easy lunch (I do make my own too 😁). Please may we have more cooking vlogs Jane?

Another great video Jane. As the old saying goes once a teacher always a teacher. As a senior I am learning wonderful tips from you. Love to your family and those beautiful dogs Dolly and Mary.❤

For many years, one of my favorite gifts from my son and daughter in law are gift cards to Dunkin Do uts for coffee. This way I can enjoy socializing with a friend once a week, and it doesn't pull anything from my budget. They also give me gift cards to a local department store. Helps defray costs of other things I may need during the year.

I totally agree with you Jane. Such a waste to stockpile items you don’t use regularly. You have great tips! Thank you🙂

You helped me no end Jayne and Mike by introducing me to sinking funds and explaining how I can implement them into my budget, thank you. I keep a very good pantry stock, building slowly, keep organised, rotate and restock as needed. Not just food, toiletries and cleaning items too.

Thank you, Jane, for this video. We have always had a "deep pantry" and it's been a blessing to us when our children were small and an unexpected event took place. Once there was a lay-off at my husband's job and he was out of work for a couple of months. We had enough saved to keep all our bills paid and there was enough food to get us through until he found other work. We married in the 1980s and times were hard. The interest on our first home was 10% and that was from my husband's relative. The bank interest rates for a home at that time were from 13 to 15%! Everyone needs to realize how a well stocked pantry is a need.

Hi Jane, another useful video. I too watch the news for clues & stocked up on oils just before the prices rocketed. On the bread front as I'm now on my own so can't eat nice crusty bread quickly enough & hate wasting it - there are only so many different ways to use it up too, so I've switched to buying 'take n bake' when its on offer & baking small amounts in my airfryer (works really well) when i get want some. I've found opened packets keep in the fridge for a few days too so I don't waste any & I've always got bread in stock. 😊

Love the advice - sensible. For me, I have plenty of food on the shelves - I pretty much go to the store for creamer (heavy cream), bottled water (where I live the public water is horrible), and fresh salad, veggies and sometimes fruit. When my meats (animal protein) gets low, I purchase more. I am a widow in my mid-late 50s and it is extremely difficult to see a balance of what I consume - so, when I am able to find deals or the price seems reasonable - I will begin the week with a certain amount and by mid-week I end up freezing what I know I won't be able to eat in time. Here in Western Washington US the veggies do not seem to last nearly as long as they used to along with the fruit - so I buy frozen and/or very small amounts at a time. I am learning to make sprouted greens to try to get the fresh nutrient calories for a better price with less waste. Everything in my area is extremely expensive including fuel for my vehicle - my little coastal town has one grocery store - and they know it. Take care all...

When I bought my car and house insurance this year i got £20 voucher for Sainsbury's with each one. Spent it on good real coffee and good butter, the only things i won't cheep out on. Enough to last for months and all for free.

You've got me thinking I should change my diet.
I am a gassy 63 year old so may have to rethink my starches. Merci Jane!
