Rusty Deadlocked Vise - Restoration (the 3rd)

In this video I'm restoring a very small rusty and deadlocked Gressel bench vise. Its jaws are just 80mm wide. My friend has found this tiny vise on the steel waste and I thought this would be cool for a video.
On first sight it was only seized and had some additional holes. When disassembling I also quickly realized that something on the half round part was not right and after sandblasting I also saw pretty deep damages near the jaws. To disassemble the movable jaw I quickly made a tool to open the vise. There's also a video about that on my second channel „my mechanics insights“, link below.
I closed the two additional holes with slight press fit plugs and closed the gap with welding. After filing the welds flush the two holes completely disappeared.
There was a bit of a mess with the threads at the half round part, so I decided to close them all with very tight press fitted plugs and cut two new M4 threads. That worked very well and these plugs will never ever come out again.
On the other deep damages I decided to weld up new material with cast iron stick welding rod. That was my very first time stick welding. Was a bit tricky to get used to it, but the end result turned out very well. I was able to file and sand all surfaces perfectly clean afterwards.
I decided to paint this vise in a nice red (RAL3011) with white highlights on the lettering.
As the spindle only had very little rust, I was able to clean it very nicely with rust remover, wire brush, some sandpaper and Scotch Brite.
For the remaining parts I first removed the deep pitting, removed the sharp edges, recut the threads and then sandblasted them to remove the remaining rust and make a nice and even texture on the sanded surfaces. To darken all these parts I used the method of hot bluing.
As the rough pattern of the jaws were in pretty good condition I decided to restore them. After a night in the rust remover and a bit of wire brushing the jaws already looked pretty good. I also had to bend them as they were a bit out of shape. As they're just case hardened this worked very well. Then I sanded all the surfaces clean, chamfered all edges and applied cold bluing to darken them.
In the end I'm very happy how this little bench vise has turned out. In my opinion the red looks very nice together with the black steel parts and the shiny sanded surfaces and the white details of the lettering are just the cherry on top.

I hope you like my work and the video.

This is an ASMR style video. Especially made to have the best sound quality, so you can enjoy all the authentic sounds created in the workshop in ASMR style.

If you have any questions about the process, machines i'm using or other stuff, just ask me in the comments. I read them all and i try to reply as soon as possible.

Sorry for my bad english, it's not my language. I try my best to improve my technical english.

You’ve done more for Gressel vise sales than any advertising they’ve done in the last 100 years 😂

I am a lady in her mid-seventies with no interest or aptitude in engineering or mechanics, but oh! how I love to watch you repair these damaged tools and restore them to a state of beauty and a second life. I particularly enjoy it when you make a tool to help you solve some problem. I am so impressed by the filming and editing of your projects. Your work is far superior to that of any other restoration channel. Thank you for the pleasure it has given me over the years.

I have a seven year old daughter who has previously never shown any interest in mechanics or engineering, but she adores your videos. We both sit and watch them together after school; I think you have inspired a future engineer!

Great work as always.

The snap sound a bolt makes when coming loose is somehow amazingly satisfying and terrifying at the same time.

You aren't demonstrating restorations; you're demonstrating a way of working. Clarity of thought, mindfulness in process, and quality of output. You'd be surprised how often your videos have affected my life in completely unrelated situations.

What is maybe not so immediately obvious to your viewers is that you are as meticulous and precise with your videography and editing as you are with your machining. It's a joy to see someone who takes so much pride in getting it exactly right. Thanks for all you do.

3 years ago I restored a vice my now deceased father started and abandoned in the late 1970s. It was too rusted up, solid. 40 years later I began fixing it up after seeing so many Youtubes of vice restorations. It took 12 days of 3 times a day soaking with penetrating oil, and shock hammering, before it budged. 2 days later we got it to open fully, and began the process. Bead blasting, pit and nick filling, and repaint.. Its amazing feeling to finish what he started and abandoned almost half a century ago.

My theory is that the earth is round because My Mechanics removed all the sharp edges

I watch tons of restoration videos from all sorts of different YouTubers, but somehow yours always end up just being on another level. Not that the others are lacking in any way, yours are just the best.

The editing, the production, the quality of the finished product, etc…

I’ve also noticed that you keep the always seem to know precisely how long to show us each of the repetitive steps like filing, sanding, sand blasting each part, etc. so that we get the idea without it getting boring. Even though you may spend 10 minutes or something sandblasting a part, we only see a few seconds. I appreciate it as a viewer.

I love that you finally got to the tiny vise! Would be great to get a picture of all of them side by side. Gray, Green, Blue & Red. :)

Maybe the most satisfying moment on this channel watching the old drill bit come out and setting new perfect bolt holes.

Your channel is often imitated but never bettered. Your work is head and shoulders above anyone and anywhere else.

You take a decades old piece of junk and make it better than brand new; you turn it into art!

Your skill, attention to detail and pursuit of perfection make you the very best and I await your videos probably more than any other on YouTube. Please keep amazing us with your work!

Watching you remove that broken drill bit was the most satisfying thing I’ve seen in a long time.

You know, I have a lot to do right now… but I see My Mechanics upload, I stop and take 20 minutes to see this master in action.

Your attention to detail is simply out of this world. No other Restoration Channel can even come close to that level of meticulousness
