The older I get, the more I'm able to humanize the people I felt hurt by in my family. That has led to more gratitude for them then I ever thought I would have.

It is nice he acknowledges that having a family you can even talk to is a privilege.

Friends are not as nice. But for many of us, friendship is all we have to keep us alive

Good for you. When family works it's the best. When it fails there are deep scars, abscesses and infection, amputations, and fighting our very nature.

"One day youll realize that you never really had good friends at all". My dad always found a way to be right.

Wisdom.

It's not that friends don't matter but for most of us it all starts, and ends, with family.

I had no support from family and very little support from friends. Most of the people you meet will use you if they can.

Not everyone has a family that sets you up well. In those cases creating your own family through friends and maybe a partner can help us feel more secure and supported.

I always loved my family but was quick to try and start a different life with friends who i felt were family. Years later everything fell apart and the friends I thought I could trust treated me like shit. They were so quick to pretend like we never were that close and I never felt so lost. Well guess who was there to support me and have my back unconditionally through the hard times. The family that was always there that I’m so lucky to have.

I can relate to that, when everybody left; I moved back.

So true. Friendships are overrated. I mean good friends are great to have but embracing and spending time with family more is something that I have overlooked, and will regret.

My family isn’t perfect. My dad is literally the worst. But as I age, I’m able to understand them and forgive them first. I’m trying to be grateful inspite of all the hurt and suffering that they caused. But yeah, I learned my lesson as well, never be a doormat for anybody in your life! Put yourself first♥️ Then you can serve others!

This only works with non-abusive families. Friendships do come and go unfortunately, so that leaves kids like me stranded outside the walls of city, as the Dr peterson put it.

Most of us realise this late. Friendship at old years is realy hard to hold.. people just change

Me is time. I was all family but now I know time is very important even though Family is number one times number two to use it wisely.

Lucky you that you have friends and family I can't depend on any friends I once had and I certainly can't depend on family of origin as evidenced by their not being available.

I should add I come from a very large Catholic family not available to me at all.
