Back in 2024, rating Monopoly and Catan with the same score… I wasn’t ready for that

I'm not a fan of Catan. However, I have a hard time believing that Tom genuinely rates the experience of playing Catan the same as he rates the experience of playing Monopoly.

I feel like lowering Catan to a 5 is “punching down”. I would rather play Catan than Monopoly

Glad to see Tom back, hope we get some Dice Tower West videos soon. That said, I realize Catan has become the whipping boy, but it's really gotten to the point of being unfair when you're giving it the same score as Monopoly. It's not THAT bad.

The reason that I don't like either Monopoly or Catan is the same. There is an initial phase of gathering properties (Catan is more strategic but not by much) them a really long drawn out stalemate phase where everyone needs to trade but will only do so if it puts them at an advantage. Eventually, someone will agree to a trade that is not balanced at which point it becomes obvious who is going to win. I rate Catan higher because there is more strategy and mitigation of this but neither is a game I want to play with another human, I will occasionally play against the app ai as the game can be played in 15 minutes.

Afternova is sadly OOP from what I see and it's sad because for parents it's a really good 'my first negotiation game'...
