With proper gear and attire for the cold weather, is this trip doable in April?

Well, I at least tried for a memorial day appropriate activity. Backpacked into a mountain lake where, in January, 1943, a B-23 Bomber was forced to attempt a landing due to being lost and out of fuel. The pilot managed to put the bomber down on the frozen lake, but it crashed into the shore. Approx. a dozen crew members remained with the crash, while 3 hiked out 40 miles to a ranger station (in a southern Idaho winter, and over several mountains). All the crew survived. Not a whole lot to see, today, but aluminum oxidizes very slowly

Today a number of trails lead to northern and eastern shores of the lake. Getting to the crash site, however, would have required wading one of two streams, both of which were running high. Since the weather was on the wet and cold side in any event, and we were backpacking (so no extra gear), we decided not to visit the crash. Hope to get back later this summer.

Just visted the site. It was sad to see the amount of graffiti
