lesley gore was a lesbian and has been a big inspiration to me for a while now. you don’t see a whole lot of older queer people, especially not famous ones.

I am so grateful to Leslie Gore for giving us an anthem that women have needed generation after generation - 2024 is no different! Thanks for helping us to stand up for ourselves bravely, passionately, and creatively.❤

It's not about feminism, it's about strength from abuse and self control

This song was written and produced by 3 men... why? money. Just like when someone shit posts on twitter for engagement, so someone posts rage bait content, this song was written by men who knew that it would cause a stir and get sales, anger is a powerful emotion and it can be monetized, the men who wrote this could not have cares less abut feminism or equality... That's what I hear when I hear this 17 year old girl that was used to trick women into spending $ on something men made. She sang plenty of songs ( that were written by men) that were very much so typical for girls in that time, this was rage bait, and it worked, it stayed #1 for 3 weeks and made record sales it's first 3 months

Lesley was vacationing in the Catskills. Madera/White (writers of You Don't Own Me) played the song for her. She liked it and when she got back home she had the guys play it for Quincy. They both liked it and Lesley recorded the song. It was featured on her 2nd Mercury album, Lesley Gore Sings of Mixed-Up Hearts. It was released December 1963. Lesley's first single from that album was She's A Fool (September 1963). Lesley recorded an updated version of You Don't Own Me for her 2005 album, EVER SINCE.

I’m a fan of Leslie but just because she had this one song, doesn’t mean she really set the example for women being strong. Let’s not forget the song where she takes back the guy that made out with her best friend Judy, or “That’s the way Boys are, ” or “maybe I know.” Not great examples IMO

Really doubt she was singing to her boyfriend because she was a lesbian
