In this video I show you HOW TO CHANGE LANES SMOOTHLY AND SAFELY. This video might be long but it covers almost all the points you need to know when changing lanes. Changing your position on the road involves changing lanes or overtaking and passing another vehicle. Before beginning, be sure you have enough space and time to complete the move safely.

Never change lanes without giving the proper signal and looking to make sure the move can be made safely.

Here are the steps for making a lane change:

Check your mirrors for a space in traffic where you can enter safely.
Check your blind spot by looking over your shoulder in the direction of the lane change. Be especially careful to check for bicycles and other small vehicles. Signal that you want to move left or right.
Check again to make sure the way is clear and that no one is coming too fast from behind or from two lanes over on a multi-lane road.
Steer gradually into the new lane. Do not slow down, maintain the same speed or gently increase it.

Never make sudden lane changes by cutting in front of another vehicle, including bicycles. Other drivers expect you to stay in the lane you are already in. Even if you signal, they expect you to yield the right-of-way.

Avoid unnecessary lane changes or weaving from lane to lane. You are more likely to cause a collision, especially in heavy traffic or bad weather. Don't change lanes in or near an intersection. Remember that spending a few seconds behind another vehicle is often safer than going around it.

Great explanation. Finally someone explained what exactly to look for when looking into mirrors, I've struggled with that a little bit.

This was by far the best explanation and demonstration needed in regards to changing lanes. I finally found the right info!! I struggle with how much to turn the steering wheel at a fast speed when changing lanes, how to gauge the distance of the car behind me and the time it takes to check the mirrors and my blind spot ! You hit it on the nail! Thank you!!

I'm presently in driving school and my most difficulty is lane changing, which my instructor was unable to explain, this video explained everything including the demonstration and it's amazing to me and very helpful. Thank you so much.

6:27 Really, I thought I was the only one. I guess it's a natural tendency to turn your head and wheel at the same time until you learn the coordination. I will never forget when I was taking driver's ed and the instructor would get so mad when I would do this. He got so mad one day, he said, if you do that again, I'm going to cuff you one. This is what I remember more than anything from driver's ed. I'm watching this video because 40 years later, I'm still not as confident as I need to be in changing lanes.

I really needed this. My driving instructor was telling my I kept doing this wrong/too slow but didn’t really explain how to correct it and I was feeling like an idiot. Plus having this explained to you on the highway while your wheel being grabbed is so stressful!!

Second video that I watched by you. The plate tip is genius! I'll definitely will keep practicing checking blind spots with the plate because I'm one of those people who turn the steering wheel while checking blind spots. I still need a lot of things to learn because I only driven 3x, need to keep practicing while waiting for my next driving lesson I can used all the tips and guidance from your videos.

Dude!, plate Exercise oh my god I’m glad you did it too. It gives me hopes that this isn’t a waste of time. Since none of my family or friends know how to drive I have to exercise my brain to get used to the road. I imagine myself into feeling that I’m on the road with my imaginary pedals, mirrors, shoulder checking and hand over hand doing parallel parking as well as a lining while parallel parking, turning signal all day like 5 hours. I don’t keep my head straight I move my head scanning my surrounding.

Thanks a.lot for your wonderful presentation. Specially I like the dos and don'ts while changing lanes on highways. It looks so easy when I watch but on the road only the real test takes place .

Watching from Nigeria, I’ve quickly subscribed to your channel. Watching how to reverse here has build my confidence. I never knew Reverse direction ‘ I keep doing it the wrong way. But this channel helped cause I’ve been going to Nigeria driving school but simply watching it here saved me d time & gave me the right insights. Thanks
