HELLFIRE
lyrics by Stefano Vittori

Beata Maria,
scis esse mihi animam
tam rectam, ut qua jure gaudeam,

beata Maria,
et jure me majorem quam
lascivum vulgus reri audeam.

Dic mihi, Maria:
si saltantem cerno, cur
ejus oculus me ustilat?

Perceptae, conspectae
sol nigro crine nectitur
et in me deflagrando furiat.

In igni Maligni hoc corpus ardet, nec
furores indigni peccata pellunt haec.

Nec error est nec criminor:
nam strix Athingana comburit aegrum cor.

Nec criminor, si, Domine,
fecisti Satan fortiorem homine.

Defende, Maria,
me a sirenis vocibus:
remota nobis illa taeda sit!

Confuta Smaragdam
et addic flammis acribus
aut in hac una manu prae da sit.

Minister Frollo, Athingana fugit.
-Quid?
Nusquam in Cathedrali invenitur. Disparuit.
-Sed quomodo? Aliud cura. Apage, carnifex! Eam inveniam, etiam si opus erit totius Lutetiae Parisiorum crematione!

Maligni cum igni est atro tibi res.
Aut mea aut ligni: alterutrius es!

Miserere ejus, miserere mei,
sed aut praeda mea aut ligni est!

English Translation

Beata Maria,
Beata Maria,
scis esse mihi animam
you know that I have a soul
tam rectam, ut qua jure gaudeam,
which is so righteous that I'm justly delighted of it.

beata Maria,
beata Maria,
et jure me maiorem quam
and, that I'm superior than
lascivum vulgus reri audeam.
the lascivous folk, I justly dare to think.

Dic mihi, Maria:
Tell me, Maria:
si saltantem cerno, cur
if I see her dancing, why
ejus oculus me ustilat?
her eye burns me?

Perceptae, conspectae
When I perceive her, when I look at her,
sol nigro crine nectitur
the sun is intertwined with her black hair,
et in me deflagrando furiat.
and while it burns in me, it drives me crazy.

In igni Maligni hoc corpus ardet, nec
In Satan's fire this body burns, and
furores indigni peccata pellunt haec.
the perverted craziness can't drive away this sin.

Nec error est nec criminor:
It's not a fault, I'm not guilty:
nam strix Athingana comburit aegrum cor.
It is the gipsy witch who burns my ill heart.

Nec criminor, si, Domine,
I'm not guilty, my Lord,
fecisti Satan fortiorem homine.
if you created Satan stronger than man.

Defende, Maria,
Protect me, Maria,
me a sirenis vocibus:
from the siren's voices:
remota nobis illa taeda sit!
may that torch be kept away from me!

Confuta Smaragdam
Condemn Esmeralda
et addic flammis acribus
and sentence her to the ferocious flames,
aut in hac una manu praeda sit.
or may she be prey of this sole hand.
Maligni cum igni est atro tibi res.
With Satan's dark fire you have to do.
Aut mea aut ligni: alterutrius es!
Either to me or to the pyre: you pertain to one of these two.

Miserere ejus, miserere mei, sed aut praeda mea aut ligni est!
Have mercy of me, have mercy of her, but she is either my prey or of the pyre.

Due to YouTube and Disney very oddly blocking the video clip of the original scene (even after several dozen attempts to modify the video clip), this video has still frames from the movie in order to evoke the original scene as best as possible, given that anything more than what you see here caused the video to be blocked worldwide. A shame! But we think the song itself and its translation will be very enjoyable in spite of this small compromise. Thanks for watching and sharing!

Translating "she will be mine" to "she will be my prey" is a perfect translation of the cruelty and possessiveness Frollo has. I love the choice.

This is genius because, despite the fact Judge Frollo is French, a 15th-century Catholic of Noble birth and status would be praying in Latin. The part in the middle with the soldier would probably be in French.

I am genuinely amazed how deep his voice could go without breaking. It made my throat hurt just out of sympathy.

Can we take a moment to appreciate the fact this guy not only was able to sing this song in Latin so well. But also the lyricist actually translated a song into another language and was able to keep the rhythm in tact. That’s really amazing

"She is either my prey or of the pyre" UMM???? HELLO??? THATS RAW AS HELL!!!!

What's funny is that, given Dom Claude Frollo's position in late 15th Century Parisian politics and religious affairs (Minister of Justice), he very well COULD have sung this in Latin. This is pure perfection. The Ecclesiastical pronunciation is flawless and goes so well with the heavy yet haunting lyrics. Bravo, gentlemen! This was a most excellent surprise.

I knew this had to come out some day, it's just natural logic

Accidentally started singing this in a mix of Ecclesiastical and Classical, summoned my college professor and the local priest, who proceeded to stare me down, their eyes judging me before they told me to choose one or the other, not both.

It upsets me how a lot of people put down Latin and call it useless and etc because its a 'dead language'. Latin has such a rich history, and plays a key part in the founding of many modern languages and much more. It is still in fact used today, for certain purposes or by certain people. Hellfire in Latin gives me the goosebumps, and it really fits with the setting of the Middle Ages. Honestly, it should be used more for things like this.

This song is far more threatening in Latin. Everything sounds more threatening in Latin.

At first I didn't like how this was in ecclesiastical Latin (because I am a bit of a classical snob), but when you think about it it actually makes more sense as that is the Latin that Frollo would actually speak.

As a devout catholic and a history entusiast, I found this perfect!

This song should have been in latin since the very launch of the movie!

The sentence "Nec criminor si, Domine, fecisti satan fortiorem homine." made me physically shiver. Just... both the meaning and the way the rythm and the phonetics of it fit the melody... Bravo

YES!!!! FINALLY A LATIN VERSION OF THIS THAT LIVES UP TO ITS PROMISE!!!

the red coats singing "mea culpa" or "my fault" at him while he's saying it isn't his fault is such a cool detail

People still do covers of hellfire? Holly shit this is amazing.

Ecclesiastical pronunciation is perfect for this. Has such a distinctive feel, closer to our times. It has in it the history of Europe after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. All variants of Latin pronunciation should be cherished.

Now I've gone on a "Hellfire in various language" binge but this one always is a standout. It just feels...more ancient and like the originator of the rest . bravo

As an ex-Latin student, singer, and Disney nerd, this is the best thing that I have seen on Youtube all week. The way you tweaked lyrics to make the rhyming scheme match up to the English was immaculate.
