The Last Great Paintings by Pablo Picasso

Nearly ninety, Pablo Picasso found himself in an utterly changed world. He was restless: “I have less and less time, and yet I have more and more to say.” But it was this sense of urgency that would allow him to create some of the greatest paintings of his career. In this episode of Expert Voices, Sotheby’s Simon Shaw examines the late work and life of Pablo Picasso through the vibrant and dynamic Mousquetaire à La Pipe. Towards the end of his life, the image of the musketeer evoked Picasso's Spanish heritage and his nostalgia for the youthful vigor of his early years. The influence of salon painters like Velázquez are evident in Mousquetaire à La Pipe, and yet with his fluid technique remains explicitly experimental. (14 May | New York)

Once in a lifetime do you see a great artist, but the true value isn't
Reached until after they are lost to the world.
I think he did a lot more work no one has ever seen. And truly beautiful art he painted over.
Canvas wasn't cheap.
So an artist took what they didn't think was good and painted over it.

Picasso has got "it" so all of his pictures are worthwhile. Including silly old soldiers with hats and pipes.

This mean speaks so passionately about art, it's fantastic. And damn, he's got some blue eyes...

This is unintentionally sad. It makes Picasso sound like the boy who never grew up. Into his 90's. he desperately tried to show the world that he was still virile, still spontaneous, still relevant.

Contrast that with other artists who do show aging and maturity in their works.
