SSD + HDD in Almost Any Laptop (The Caddy Method)

[cc] Only one 2.5 inch drive bay? No M.2 slot? You can still have both an SSD and hard disk drive together in your laptop. In this video we ditch the waste of space called the “DVD drive” and use an optical disk drive (ODD) caddy for a second 2.5 inch drive.

• Cloning Windows to an SSD (Macrium Reflect)

 • Original video: SSD + HDD Dual Drive Setup in Almost ANY LAPTOP

This guide is for intermediate computer users who are familiar with terms like SATA, hard disk drive, solid state drive (SSD), drive cloning, M.2, and optical drive (referring to CD, DVD, and Bluray drives). The user is also expected to do hands-on internal hardware upgrades to a laptop.

The good thing about this video is all options, what ifs and whys when there's 100% successful and errors on the process, you cover it and provided answers. Thank you for this content. Very informative! Deserves a subscribe and like.

Stumbled across this video by accident. I stayed due to the fact that this video was done exceptionally well! I'm currently upgrading my laptop, but no CD drive on my laptop, so no reason to stay. Everything was well explained and brought down to speed for those that may have trouble understanding all of the tech abbreviations, or lingo. I've subscribed, and I hope you're still making videos like this.

I want to share one important point with all. Always connect SDD with existing HDD sata 3 port to get max speed and you can shift existing HDD to DVD rom drive port sata 2 especially in case of laptop

This video not only covered almost everything about the upgrade process, but also covered some things to think about before proceeding (feasibility, how about an m.2 drive instead, etc.). Things a lot of content creators miss. Also, KABABAYANNNN. Nakakaproud maging Pinoy dahil sayo bro.

You are great man, not just for explaining clearly but also for your honest with people that you explain what are the probs that may have been faced and why hat is happening and how to solve it
, on the other hand your video is perfectly suiting with my case :D ( laptop Lenovo, HDD disk is Seagate, SSD is WD green and want to make my SSD as primary drive for fast booting) .
great Job!

What I did in mine is that..

1. Took off the HDD
2. Insert my SSD and install windows
3. Insert my HDD to caddy

I did not option the cloning since I decided to reformat and upgrade to windows 10

It works for me and had amazing results.

Many thanks. Just implemented this process. Used Macrium Reflect for cloning. Kept it simple by cloning a one terabyte platter HD to a one terabyte SSD. My laptop is an HP Pavilion 15 about 5 years old that I had previously upgraded to a one TB HD a year or so ago. My first plan was to place the SSD device in the CD-ROM caddy. But that would not give the best SSD performance.
So I replaced the old HD with the new SDD (after cloning). And then I fitted the old HD in the caddy and replaced the CD-drive with the caddy. BINGO! That's the way to get the best performance from the SSD, as this video says.
Now the clincher. Anyone who uses a laptop onsite to do a contract job has to backup continually. Otherwise, there is the risk that malware will cause loss of work and lost time and even breach of contract. But with this setup, backup is easy. When I take a break of 5 or 10 minutes every hour or so, I save a new version of the file I am working on (v.01, v.02, v.03). Now, instead of backing up each new version on an external USB drive, I back up on the second internal HD. Saves time.
And if I install new software or install an update to existing software or to the operating system, at the end of the working day, I can just clone the SSD to the second internal HD.
Then if catastrophe strikes in the form of failure of the SSD or malware, I can just swap the old HD back into the drive bay on the motherboard and I am back at work in less than 10 minutes. The cost of a one TB SSD plus HD caddy are now low enough to be classed as insurance against data loss.
Actually, I am more paranoid about data loss than this and do keep more than one clone of my main drive on an external HD. And store one clone in a safe place in case the laptop is lost or stolen.
I have worked this HP Pavilion very hard on offshore sites in more than one country and more than one continent, back and forth every day from hotel to client office. And it still chugs along. Obviously I don't edit videos, at least not often. So the "slow" speed of the I5 CPU is no problem and since my laptops usually last 10 years (until the keyboards wear out) I have no reason to replace the laptop with a later model.
So great to boot in seconds instead of minutes.

Complete descriptive video loved this. Some laptop can't boot from drive in the caddy.

The reason that the HDD may not be detected in the optical drive is because maybe, the HDD is drawing too much current from the DVD's internal port, during the initial spin up, HDD will draw significantly more current for a few seconds, manufacturers probably didn't anticipated their DVD slot will experience such a current surges so they might not make enough power headroom for the DVD power rails. Of course this is from my personal opinion, it may depended on several factors (Chipsets, Drivers, HDD brands...)

Thanks for uploading a tutorial. This was really helpful for ramping up the performance for my Dell Inspiron 5559.

The cloning software that I used was Samsung Data Migration for my Samsung SSD 860 Evo.
