The Difference Between a Geneticist and a Genetic Counselor

A geneticist is a physician trained in the identification and management of genetic conditions either through genetic residency programs or fellowship. They can prescribe medicine, treat patients, and assist other healthcare professionals working as a team to manage individuals with rare, genetic diseases.

A genetic counselor typically has a Master's degree in genetic counseling but not a medical degree. They also work with a team of healthcare professionals focused on managing individuals or families with rare, genetic diseases. Often, genetic counselors educate adults about family planning when there is a risk having a baby with a genetic condition.
