Asynchronous and Synchronous Communication

Online learning can be divided into both synchronous and asynchronous forms of communications.

Synchronous learning occurs when instructors and learners are exchanging ideas in real-time. Traditional classrooms are often homes to synchronous communication. Telephone conversations are synchronous, whereas YouTube videos are asynchronous.

Asynchronous learning has always existed in education in the forms of books, journals, newspapers, and even cave paintings. Sometimes a professor will record a classroom lecture and make it available online for viewing later. In that case a synchronous situation becomes asynchronous.
