I love how in this short Michael was completely serious, no jokes or gags. Just showing respect to someone who did not get it in his time.

And what's even more crazier is that the whole cold war era is full of these close-call stories. It really is a miracle we never started the nuclear war.

“One guy who voted no.”
Michael’s voice makes that sound so cold

You know what, I'm glad YouTube allowed shorts to be longer. This actually feels like vsauce.

This stuff NEEDS to be taught in schools everywhere. It is something that affected the entire world, and one person simply saying "no" saved billions of people

Man that rings true here…

There are dozens of stories just like this spanning the entire cold war. Literally a sneeze away from nuclear annihilation

Bro never telling the story to anyone but probably close friends and family is hella humble

Man had the balls to say "no" despite the pressure from his superiors and his whole country, and it saved all of us. Thank you Vasily Arkhipov, may history never forget you and your courage.

Amen. Thank you for sharing this incredibly pivotal moment . The world was watching the tension of potential war 🙏🏻

This is why you have to stand up for peace even when everyone else is shouting war…I can’t imagine the pressure on him to say yes. This man is a hero and he didn’t run around looking for fame after either. True hero

This is even crazier once you really let the fact that the actions that SINGLE-HANDEDLY saved most of humanity went unrecognized his entire life time. Dude didn't even care about the praise, he did what was right and was satisfied, regardless of what his own people said. Props, may he rest in peace, and may his name live on.😤

Rest in Peace, Stanislav Petrov. Another hero, forgotten in the pages of history. He was similarly a Soviet Air Defense colonel, who in 1983, was alerted that a missile had been launched from the United States, followed by up to four more. Petrov judged the reports to be a false alarm and cancelled retaliatory measures, saving the world from nuclear armeggedon.

Unbelievably interested in knowing how he felt in those moments... one of the very few to truly experience the weight of the world on their shoulders.

The fact that the entire human race was saved by a single "no" sends shivers down my spine.

When you come across a video that makes searching for something worth watching not a waste of time. Grateful I found this

What’s even scarier is that a similar incident happened in the 80s. The fact that we haven’t blown ourselves up at this point is incredibly unlikely but I’m so glad its the universe I live in

I was in Jr. High school . Because of my parents, and a teacher I remember this, and better understood the reality of how close we had come to having a lot less population . And a planet that would have been unlivable for those who survived the first round . And it would not have taken long for the rest of the population to be gone . I miss the knowledge of my mom and dad, their friends, and many of the great teachers We had in our community .

Actually, Arkhipov wasn't second in command. He was the commander of the squadron of which B-59 was a part of. Furthermore, the fact that Arkhipov was onboard that exact ship is a miracle itself, because normally a soviet submarine could launch its missiles with only 2 votes (ship's captain and political officer), and Arkhipov's command submarine was an exception, where additionaly his third vote was required. So if he decided to sail onboard another submarine of his squadron, B-59 would have launched the missiles with the 2 votes.
