TRANSFORMERS: THE BASICS on XAARON

The penultimate entry in this year's Obscure Character Month returns us to the world of the original Marvel "Transformers" comic book! He's an Autobot councillor turned resistance leader turned avatar of Primus, who just this year, after nearly four decades, recieved his first ever toy. These are The Basics on EMIRATE XAARON!

I feel like in an alternate universe where the Marvel comic was the 'main' 80s Transformers fiction instead of the cartoon, Xaaron would have been the defacto "senior Autobot" character who we would have seen used instead of Alpha Trion.

Given what Emirate actually means, it would have been funny if Emirate Xaaron had got a figure in the Kingdom toyline so we could say “Kingdom Emirate Xaaron”

Xaaron is proof that no matter what prominent role a character has in the comics, in the world of the Transformers, there's no guarantee when or if you will receive an action figure if you aren't shown actually transforming, but given time even 40 years later, the dream may eventually become reality. The Transformers really are more then meets the eye with obscure characters such as Xaaron eventually making the leap from comic pages to the hands of collectors in plastic goodness.

The first time I ever heard of Xaaron was in the Basics video on Primus, and to hear he's getting a toy after 40 years of obscurity is quite the surprise. Flame I had heard about in the Trypticon video and it was great to hear a little more about him on the side too.

Considering how prominent he was in the old comics it’s really surprising Xaaron hasn’t ever made it onto TV.

His vehicle mode looks like a snowmobile that was in the process of getting crushed into a cube only for the owner to suddenly get all sentimental and pull it out when it was half done. And the turret on top looks like some sort of novelty pencil sharpener that the designer put way too much thought into.

My first introduction to Xaaron was in the American Marvel Comic, when Bumblebee, Jazz and Grimlock were in his resistance base. They treated Xaaron as an old acquaintance, someone all three respected and trusted, but I had never heard of. In 1989, when this comic was released, precious few of the Marvel UK stories were available stateside, so Xaaron was a really obscure character for me when he debuted in the American comic.

I remember this guy from the last issues of the Transformers comics. He was an interesting character to say the least. I'm glad he finally got a toy version with an alternate mode. The tank mode works for me.

0:58 The retcon of the word "Prime" into a title in Marvel's _Transformers_ created a rather unique precedent: dispite receiving the Matrix, Optimus didn't become the leader of the Autobots by default and still had to prove his worth. It adds a flavour of realism to the situation.
