When You Should Consider A Gaming Monitor Over A TV

When playing video games, for as long as memory can recall, we’ve played on either TVs or monitors, with handhelds often coming with TV-style screens. Consoles tend to be hooked up to televisions, while PCs almost always are connected to monitors. However, either technology works with both devices.

Many think you need a gaming PC, or even a PC at all, to take advantage of the many, often gamer-specific features built into monitors, like high refresh rates and fast response times. This isn’t the case; in fact, many of the benefits of monitors can apply to consoles, if you simply choose to hook your console up to a monitor instead of a television.

There are a few sacrifices, if you’re starting from a really high-end, expensive TV, going to a monitor from a TV, but there are not just many benefits but you can often find a better value in a monitor for gaming than you can with an equivalently priced TV.

Depending on your configuration and how you like to game personally, a monitor might not work for every setup. But if you’re serious about getting games to play their best and feel as responsive and accurate as they possibly can, even when gaming on a console, there is no better investment than in a monitor over a traditional television. This is much more the case now than ever before, with the latest generation consoles supporting framerates up to 120FPS.

If you can afford it, get both and enjoy. If not, I find multiplayer games are well for monitors and story games are great on a 4K HDR Tv.

Went from an expensive 4K top of the line tv to a cheap all in one hp monitor and I realized I’ve been gaming wrong for a long time. Immediately ordered the 28 inch Samsung odyssey G7 can’t wait to see how great it will look knowing a cheap monitor did 10x better for me than a top of the line tv. Gaming is so much smoother and and you can see things so much more clear. You will feel the difference in shooters and your accuracy will improve. At least mine has

Biggest selling advantage for monitors is glare! Being close and no glare, lower power and smaller sizes if cramped in spaces. TV does have the bigger size for the couch viewing and more ports for plugins, entertainment for bigger screens and nothing wrong with gaming on bigger screens for that cinematic experience. I have both and will switch between them once in awhile. Multiplayer seems way more easier on smaller screens

I think it's time to switch to a monitor. My TV just isn't cutting it anymore. Too damn pixelated.

1440p is the sweet spot for me. It's still very sharp but doesn't hit the GPU/console too much.

Destiny 2 is currently doing PvP at 1440p at 120fps on Series X and Ps5.

I have been looking to upgrade my Benq 1080p gaming monitor and I have really considered the LG CX48. After tonnes of research this has confirmed why I should stick to a gaming monitor for my PS5. One thing I never considered is eye strain. When I hook my PS5 to a TV my eyes get incredibly tired quickly. Where as on a gaming monitor I could play for hours on end! You have really helped me here. Currently waiting for LG’s new 4K 120hz HDMI 2.1 gaming monitor coming out end of May 2021.

I'm a truck driver and been using a monitor since around the time the switch came out. Looking to get a new one when the hdmi 2.1 sets roll in. Considering the asus. I want good hdr as well since I missed out on it all last gen.

Watching this video, made me feel like that I wasted $300 on my TV, because I barely watched TV shows

I got my series s and used it on my tv. I loved it.

Gaming on monitor is really best for competitive game play. If you're a casual gamer and play other types then a TV is nice to be able to sit on the couch (close up).

Should’ve played with the two smoke if they’re practicing I think they use a two stroke just for the faster feeling

I play mostly single player games... Monitors have terrible image quality compared to a high end TV such as OLEDs or FALD leds

For years, I've used my PC on a LG 4k tv and was limited to 60fps, which was fine for most games since I came from consoles (that usually ran games at lower resolutions and fps). However, I just moved over to my first monitor (32 inch 4k 144hz) and I will never go back.

Response time is the most important for me. What monitors would you recommend for my console that have good response times?
