Get the 7xxx series. There's a lot of older beautiful lenses you can get for cheaps, which you can't use for the D5500.

What's up Matt!! First, let's be clear about these matters. The Nikon D7100 & D7200 are not the same camera entirely. The D7200 is a better camera in a number of ways. The D7200 has many advantages over it's predecessor (D7100). The D7200 has a newer processor (Expeed 4 vs Expeed 3 in the D7100) than the D7100 among these other features: smart phone control; better battery life; better low-light ISO capability; better color depth; better dynamic range; built-in wireless connectivity as oppose to purchasing another adapter to connect to the D7100; bigger and faster buffer. I submit to you and anyone else that the value of the D7200 per cost is the greatest now and has been for sometime. The D7200 is a beast!!!

Get D5500 with the kit for travel and the 50mm f1.8. Or if you want to spend a bit more, do the D5500 with the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 and the 50mm f1.8. Great combination.

Get lightly used / refurbished D7200 and used Nikon 18-140.
And if you need more reach, get the used Tamron 18-270 VC PZD instead of 18-140.

I'd get D7100 with a 35mm 1.8 DX and 55-200 VR II. Then later, as money allows, get the sigma 17-50 and maybe an 85 1.8D or G

Hey Matt, thank you so much for answering my question and I did in fact buy the 5500 with the 18-140mm for that extra focal length. i wasn't sure if I was going to get into photography so i opted for the 5 series instead of the 7 series. Now that I have it, the photo quality blows me away and the camera is super fun to tinker around with. I think I'll be saving up for the 17-50mm particularly for parties and portraits because of its great sharpness. Thank you and cheers!!!

They don't have the same sensor. The 7100 has one made by Toshiba and the 7200 sensor is made by Sony. Low ISO details are better with the 7100.

Hi, you keep saying the 50mm 1.8 and sigma 17-50 2.8. When you stopped shooting weddings, what gear did you used? What where your to go lenses and bodies. Thanks

I bought a factory refurbished D7200 from Adorama and am really pleased with it, great camera. I previously had a D3300. The D7200 has an internal motor so you can auto-focus with lenses w/o built in motors (which you can't do with the D5500). I found this handy with the very good Tokina 100 mm macro (although auto-focusing on macro shots is not always a big deal or necessity. AAlso the D7200 is a nice camera for sport/action shots. I got the Nikon 18 - 300 mm all-around lens when I went traveling on vacation last year and find it is a great all-around lens and the one I use most of the time. I can take good close-ups of insects and then crop in Photoshop and get good quality macro-type shots too. I can also take nice wide shots and good portrait shots and not have to hassle with changing lenses (especially since I am not a professional photographer). Great flexible lens.

Why would you choose a 50mm and a 17-50mm as your 2 lens kit? Seems redundant. At least get something outside of the focal range of the zoom as your prime. An 85mm for example. As for which body, the 7100 beats the others hands down all day long. A quality used copy with low shutter count can be had for under $600.

Im thinking about upgrading. I currently have a nikon d 5500 and wondering if i should wait for the full frame d760 or just buy the d500. Is it worth having full frame?

Hey Matt I love your videos so very informative but I have to correct you on something on this video. You said the only difference between the 7100 in the 7200 is the buffer that's not correct.

You said that they have the same sensor no they don't if you look at the number of megapixels in the sensors between the two cameras are there different amounts the 7100 has a sensor that's made by Toshiba the new 7200 has a sensor that's made by Sony.

The image quality is noticeably better on the 7200 the iso performance is better on the 7200.

Other than that they're basically the same about $150 difference between the two if you pick them up on eBay I would choose the 7200 over the 7100.

Keep it going Matt love your videos.

Having Nikon D5300 will be a bad idea you think?

d7100 is 1.920 x 1.080, 60i
d7200 is 1.920 x 1.080: 60p if you want to shoot video...

This is a good question, the answer is not simple. Is it better to buy a cheaper body and more lenses for your budget or buy the more expensive body and only have one lens? If you buy the D7200 then that's a body you can grow with, the D5500 won't autofocus the older ( and cheaper) D series Nikkors so you may find it a false economy long term. Personally, I'd go with either/or D7100/D7200 and stick with the one zoom to start with. Add additional lenses as and when you can later. :-D

why can't these guy's be more specific? what kind of pictures and/or videos are you using these cameras for? what kind of lenses are you looking to buy with the cameras? what is your budget? are you using this professionally or as a hobby? etc. I would have a better idea if you guys would just be a tad more specific.

D7200 is better over ISO 800 but worse shadow recovery under D7100.  You will save more money in the long run being able to use old D lenses with the D7XXX.  Looking at his lens selection has me "assuming" he doesn't shoot sports action where the D7200 would be better.  For $1k I would get the D7100 and Sigma 17-50.  I think all questions about which cameras should have: What do you shoot? Budget? Are you in a system now? How much video?
