The developers of the BMW M3 and M4 have the floor. No frills; just information — first-hand from those who know best. In Episode 19, Karsten talks about the M Steptronic Transmission of the new M vehicles.

BMW M3 Competition / BMW M4 Competition:
Fuel consumption in l/100 km (combined): 10.2. CO2 emissions in g/km (combined): 234.
BMW M3 / BMW M4::
Fuel consumption in l/100 km (combined): 10.8. CO2 emissions in g/km (combined): 248.

The values of fuel consumptions, CO2 emissions and energy consumptions shown were determined according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version applicable at the time of type approval.

The figures refer to a vehicle with basic configuration in Germany and the range shown considers optional equipment and the different size of wheels and tires available on the selected model. The values of the vehicles are already based on the new WLTP regulation and are translated back into NEDC-equivalent values in order to ensure the comparison between the vehicles. [With respect to these vehicles, for vehicle related taxes or other duties based (at least inter alia) on CO2-emissions the CO2 values may differ to the values stated here.] The CO2 efficiency specifications are determined according to Directive 1999/94/EC and the European Regulation in its current version applicable. The values shown are based on the fuel consumption, CO2 values and energy consumptions according to the NEDC cycle for the classification.

The only bad side with the M steptronic is that we don't have that explosive sound from the exhaust between gear changes

I would love to hear the reasoning behind using a standard automatic that shifts in 150ms vs a DCT that shifts in 8ms.

M ZF 8AT is super good. I love this transmission way more than the last generation DCT.
I currently drive X4Mc. It's so comfortable and very smart and most importantly it shifts fast and accurate.

At the very end he said the DCT is faster when shifting to the optimal gear, where the ZF is faster when shifting to the non-optimal gear. When racing, you're always shifting to the optimal gear, so the benefit of the ZF is negated. Sounds like BMW used this as another cost saving measure (think CF driveshaft in the F series vs. steel in G series)..

What is the shift threshold from 7th to 8th gear ?

150 ms gear change? E60 M5 could, allegedly shit in 65 ms. Some independent tests reported 150 ms actual shift time for the SMG III though. It’s still slower shifting than a Maserati MC-Shift automated manual found on the MC Stradale, which apparently shifts in 60 ms clutch-in and clutch-out included. Only downside of these super fast automated manuals is that they can’t transmit power during shifts, but guess what, the auto can’t transmit power when it ignition cuts anyways

lol, Dude... all you really had to say is that, blah blah blah, its a fucking slush box, no money, no DCT... BMW management told us that you get no budget this year and this is the only lame gear box that we currently have on our shelves in the warehouse ... its the same ZF slush box as on your moms Ram 1500 pickup truck but it works ok, and if you don't like it there is still an old 6 speed manual unit that we can slap in for ya.... and BMW, we THANK YOU very much for keeping the clutch pedal as we really didn't want to switch to a shitty overpriced 2 door Porsche!

That was not a satisfying answer at all regarding why the torque converter transmission was chosen over the DCT. He basically said “eh, we thought it was good enough”. Come one BMW, give us more than that.

Hallo Karen, welcome back 🙋🏻‍♂️ just as a transmission changes gear, is there a mechanics to change that 🐽 front design and other bad elements of G80?

Soooo BMW took the transmission from the M5 and dropped it in the M3 and thus saved on cost at the sacrifice of building a real sportscar for enthusiast. Got it.
