❤ Thank you for this.
I want to build my own.
Just the ability to say I did this (even just to myself) and the joy of putting my own creativity into it.

The "whole idea" of tiny houses is whatever you need it to be. For my partner and I, it was the path of least resistance to property ownership. Our choices were: 3 years in a tiny house in RV parks, 20 years being gutted by "luxury" apartment corporations, or 5-10 years in utter misery at the mercy of a slumlord. We chose the tiny.

Absolutely *no way* could my partner and I have afforded these fancy fixtures, appliances, and finishes in a normal sized house. We paid our dues at a lovely RV park and now we're sittin pretty on 5 acres. This is thanks to our tiny house builder. They play an essential role for many of us.

Best i ever saw was a young guy called Ethan in Florida. He built his own 30ft+ THOW for about $8K, it had Living room, Kitchen, Bathroom and Big Bedroom all on 1 level with a hang out loft mid way. He did a great Job.

Based on my building skills the only tiny house I can put together is a tent ⛺️.

Yes we are building ourselves and it’s saving a ton. It seems like windows are the most expensive collectively so we shopped at the Habitat for Humanity in our area and saved thousands, literally thousands. I would say when we are finished with our 12 X 16 we will spend less than $25k with us doing all work ourselves.

I do agree that some of the Tiny House builds are getting very expensive and counterintuitive to the original notion of freedom from debt and material things. I’m personally not interested in videos of luxury tiny homes. I prefer videos of folks, like me, who live FULL time in 250 square-feet to make ends meet. Their ideas to make the space work and a dollar stretch are what interest me.

Well said! But just to add, the pros know more about local building regulations compared to many who go down the DIY route, so you're also paying for regulatory knowledge and possibly a network depending on the builder, of where it is possible to park your tiny home.

Unless you’re a small business owner it’s difficult to understand business costs. For those of us who have to make payroll, and keep costs down it is impossible in times like these to do anything for less. The tiny home movement is not all about lower building costs, it’s about lower cost of living. It’s about freedom. The freedom to move about and keep more of your hard earned wealth instead of being tied to crazy utility bills, taxes and overall financial slavery.

I agree, DIY in most cases will be more affordable. One thing that can help ensure DIY is using NOAH or Pacific Northwest to certify your tiny to ANSI specifications. This will help make sure your build is strong, and ANSI certification will open up more places to.put your tiny if you don't own land to put it on.

For those able to DIY it, the rest of us can only be jealous. And with post covid prices still around for much in the supplies needed the cost is insanely high by comparison. What I'll pay for my tiny is more than what many in other parts of the country will pay for a traditionally built house.
