Works as a toy, making gears fitting one into another while turning and loaded is basically impossible. Those teeth will brake in a minute.
In addition, the uneven loads on inclined contact on straight tools will lead to premature wear.

Great job, Would it now be possible to make angled gears, I think the angle is constant so tapering all cogs the same angle to the selector slide shaft should work, worth doing to see if gears would still select or bind. My quick guess it could be done, this should produce better transfer of torque plus less noise etc. Fantastic concept much like the old bench drill belt change pully configuration.

You could try to simplified by powering the middle shaft, it would have a different ration but would be smaller. You just need a specific differential lock that would act as a clutch
