The new rebuilt lab should be called Phoenix lab. ;)

2:24 "There were no chemicals in the building, I should say there is no research chemicals, because everything in the world is made out of chemicals!" This man is awesome.

Nearly a year later I'm just now hearing of this as I'm just now listening through hello internet

I'd not heard about this, but I'm glad to see you guys are staying positive and that you'll rebuild.
Best of wishes, and I look forward to eventually seeing many Periodic Videos from the beautiful new facility when it's completed.

This hardly needs to be said, but *one improvement* could be to look over the plans for containing a fire again (and other security issues), sure the building wasn't complete at the time and probably didn't have all protection in place, but still more safety features is always better.

We're glad that no one was hurt, and we look forward to your videos in the new lab upon completion. You guys do a wonderful job of showing her terrific science and chemistry is.

I bet the fire was caused by rags and linseed oil. These are common on building sites where wood is used and for some reason builders just can't seem to wrap their heads around the fact that a rag soaked in linseed oil will combust by itself, if left to its own devices. Fires caused in this manner usually erupt several hours after work has ended.

I missed this news, so all I can say is my heartfelt thoughts are going out to all our friends at the University of Nottingham and in particular, the wonderful Chemistry team whom I've come to know through Periodic Videos. What an extraordinary thing to happen to your wonderful new project and building. Thank heavens for no casualties.

This may be in bad taste but, I wonder how much carbon was released from the burning of a carbon neutral building?

I am really sad for the building... I can´t do nothing, I hope you recover the material losses as soon as possible. I appreciate this kind of buildings, there are made to look awesome and show the world the side of science which is not only for introverted people doing math at boring environments...

I am not a scientist, I still being a bachelor for now but all I can do is being thankful to hear that nobody was hurt. Hope you the best from Venezuela.

Well, that can't be great as far as budget and schedule goes...
Hopefully the investigation provides useful data!

So sorry for your loss. That would have been such a beautiful building. Thank goodness no one was hurt. And thank goodness no research was lost! Best wishes and good luck for rebuilding.

1. Glad nobody was hurt.

2. Something seems fundamentally wrong about a chemistry lab that isn't made of fireproof materials. If that building had been loaded with the chemicals (and isotopes) your current lab building has now, what would have the effects been?

Being from America, this is actually the first I've heard of this. I'm very glad to know that no people were hurt or killed and that no research materials were lost. Good thoughts being sent your way. May the cause be swiftly found, and best of luck on building the chemistry building again!

Oh no, how tragic. At least nobody was hurt & glad to hear it will be rebuilt.

Best wishes to everyone in the department and I'm glad to see you are all looking to the future. So glad nobody was injured.

Why would you make a chemistry building out of wood?  A fire is bound to happen, especially with all the controlled fires they have in a lab.  It could turn quickly into a uncontrolled fire

Best wishes from Sweden. Keep up the great work. I was sad to hear about the fire but glad that no one was hurt.
