The C-61/D-21 license is for Contractors that specialize in installation and maintenance of various types of machinery including:
Dock levelers
Dumb waiters
Garment Trolley Systems
Conveyor belts
Factory conveyor belts
Automatic car washing machines
Auto body paint finishing machines
Handicap lifting equipment
Factory crane systems
Various pumps and similar machinery
And much more!
Machinery design and Installation services are utilized by several different types of business that depend on scale and operate within factories.
The Contractors State License Board is the governing agency for contractors in the state of California. There are 73 classifications for licenses offered by the CSLB
You will first need to meet the basic California contractor license requirements:
-18 years of age
-Driver’s License or USA ID
-Social Security or ITIN #
-Not Currently on Probation or Parole
In addition to these basic requirements. Contractors looking to offer installation services for machinery must have at least 4 years of journeyman level experience which may include: safe installation of machinery and pumps.
To be a licensed and bonded contractor in California you will need someone who can sign off on your experience. Journeyman level experience is gained working unsupervised performing all of the duties associated assembly and installation of machinery and pumps.
The C-61/D-21 license is for experienced professionals who do not need to be taught anything about their expertise. Only those with sufficient experience and knowledge of safety are allowed to become licensed contractors.
California contractors are expected to have achieved a certain level of mastery in their trade and must understand the basics of engineering and installation.
The entire process to get the C61 contractor’s license takes about 90 days.
There are several factors which we talk about in the video that can extend this process beyond 90 days. The best way to ensure that you get your California contractor license quickly is to have all of your documentation in order before you submit the application.
If you have a criminal record, you will want to make sure that all of your court documents are in order.
If you have worked under the table, try to get any proof of experience that you can. This can be check stubs, tax returns, receipts, invoices anything that can show you have worked in pumps and machinery installation industry for at least 4 years.
You will also need to pass the CSLB law & business exam.
The exam consists of 115 questions of contractor license law. Refer to the video for more information on exactly what will be on the CSLB law and business exam.
Choosing a contractor license school can be very helpful in helping you pass your state exam. Contractor classes should cover law only.
Make sure that you prepare by using law study guides and practice tests. Remember that contractor classes should be law and OSHA Safety focused, not teaching trade.
There are several contractor license schools all over the state that offer programs for all 73 license classifications. If you are looking to one day get the general contractor license, it will be very helpful for you to take a blueprint reading class.
If you find yourself working on or around structures built pre-1978 you will want to look into getting an EPA lead safety certification.
Getting the C61 contractor’s license can be a huge step up for you in your career. In addition to being licensed and bonded, there may be a requirement for some type of journeyman certification. Be sure to check your local county and city laws for equivalents to the C61 license
